speedo issues in 92 pickup

Alrighty guys 1st off this site is awesome. 2nd i have a 92 toyota pickup 3.0 v6 automatic that my wifes dad left to us in his will. This truck is ruff on the outside but mechanically sound other than the speedo issues.

The speedometer sometimes does not start working until the truck warms up, and for whatever reason it stopped completely today and when it did the lights on the gear slector stopped working as well.

The flashing light means there is a trouble code stored in the computer. I'd start there.

A friend of mine has a similar problem. His speedo works sometimes then not others. But he has no instrument lights on and he's not throwing any codes...

Any ideas?

I dont remember 100%, but I believe that 92's have a cable, and not a sensor... if this is the case, I'd say the cable is bad. However, I had a 92 with the sensor, and that would sometimes just start working after about an hour of driving, other times it would just jump all over the place, and the rest of the time, not work at all....
You might check for the sensor, it will be on the rear passensger side of the transfer case, in my case...the sensor itself was fime, it was the little prongs on the connector that were rotted out(been submerged a time or 2...lol)...a little solder, and new prongs, and that puppy worked fine till I totaled the rig
