Angry Since we're on the subject of nerf bars...

After reading the thread about nerf bars fitting a 4runner... it gave me some inspiration...

I have looked at these ugly things every day and no matter what I do I cannot seem to get rid of the rust. My nerf bars are stainless, and the rust is only on the surface. Any miracle products out there?

Then I would have to paint my toolbox black to make it match. Oh and I might as well get rid of all the chrome and paint my bumpers black, too.

I guess I should've been a little more specific

those are the exact same nerf bars i have. they ain't stainless. if you look inside the end of the bar, you'll see rust. when the chrome plate gets a crack in it, water can get to the steel underneath and rust. try cleaning the rust off, then dry, and clear-coat the bars to re-seal.

here's a good article on cleaning rust from chrome:

Yea, those are not stainless steel. Chrome plated as already said. To do it right you will need to make sure the metal is still good and not rotted. Then have them re-chromed.

So what I'm hearing is...

Wait for them to rust through and trade them in for some sliders? OK...

But I'll try the steel wool and some elbow grease for now...

Course I can't be too upset.. They've been on the truck for at least 12 years... And much like everything else on the truck, nothing lasts forever.

just hit the frame twister and bend those things off and get some sliders!

but steel wool does work wonders

best solution: proper rock sliders

2nd would be to sand and paint like suggested. you can also try NEVR-DULL -- I used to use that on the chrome of my Dad's Delmont 88 - worked pretty good for cleaning up chromed items.
