So I'm about to install a purolator fuel filter in my 91 3.0 4runner and I noticed that when I shake it it makes a light metallic rattling noise. This fuel filter came with the truck when I bought it from the previous owner 3 years ago and has just been sitting in my glove box. I wonder if its broken or defective? Can anyone whose replaced their fuel filter let me know?

Um........I've never had a fuel filter "rattle". If you look at the construction of one, it's not supposed to. I'd chuck it and buy a new one. Unless something has actually broken off in there, though, I'd have to suspect with the filter hanging around in the glove box (prior to or after your owning it) something may have just gotten inside there. That is if it didn't have the little, plastic caps on either end?

As much of a PITA as it is to work with those damn fuel line fittings, put on a new OEM filter and you'll be good for a long time (like maybe 100,000 miles).

It's exactly a "rattle" but when I shake it it I hear something moving around inside making a light noise. I did a search and found people talking on a BMW forum saying it was normal for their fuel filters, (I know completely different vehicle)

No kidding.

As a contrast, I just changed out the filter on my '89 Peugeot 505. It was so stinking easy I almost cried. It's conveniently tucked up inside the molding of the underbelly at a vertical angle right next to the also easily accessible fuel pump. Took me like 15min's to actually change it out. I almost didn't know what to do with myself afterward.

Well, all I can say is it's your call. I've never had one I bought for the 3.0 rattle, so I'd still call it abnormal and wouldn't use it.

x2 on something getting inside during the filter's tenure in the glovebox. Did you look?

I probably will. I think I'm just going to get another one. I hear lots of people insist on using OEM fuel filters, is it common to have problems with aftermarket ones? I don't want to sped extra money for no reason.

I wouldn't be installing any parts I found in the glove box of a USED truck that I didn't know for 100% was new. Spend the few $$$ and get a new one from Toyota.

I ended up just buying a new oem filter from the dealer and got it on, I plan on making a beer can holder with the old filter brush guard, hahaha
