Shifting issue. Stick spins.
as the title says, when I'm going through gears when trying to shift into 5th and reverse, the stick will swing to far to the right, and bypass the gear completely. it is absolutely possible to swing the stick all the way around. has anyone else had this problem? Is it fixable? I've never had this happen before.

I was having a similar problem, I went on marlin crawler and ordered a new seat and socket for my shift lever, installed it and 15 min later it felt like a brand new truck..

The Delrin shifter ball seat and socket from marlincrawler is a very good upgrade. The stock seat gets pulverized giving the lever plenty of play.
When I replaced mine they weren't in that bad of shape but the delrin seat added more directness to the lever. I drove it that way for a while but soon realized that wasn't the only problem.
(Since you're already working in that area you might consider changing your trans fluid even if it's been done)
When the trans was cold it didn't want to shift into the lower gears without a little struggle, especially when downshifting. It got better in warmer weather or when I had driven several miles insuring it was plenty warmed up. After lots of reading on different forums one product stood above the rest for this particular problem on these transmissions, that's Redline MT-90 fluid. Seems these transmissions don't much care for the GL-5 spec fluid and prefer the GL-4, which MT-90 is.
After I swapped fluid it took a few miles but it seems to have greatly helped my trans. I haven't read about any other dino or synthetic fluid having the same effect. Pretty clear choice for these trucks in my mind.

The door jam has all the info there on the drivers side. Marlin crawler has a video on how to change them on their website that helps. I've got a video on my 95 4 runner that I can post later when I get a chance

The hardest part is getting the shifters retaining ring to spin as you're pushing down on it because it's spring loaded. ANY fluid makes it a pain, especially when reinstalling it. I found cleaning it off with a paper towel sprayed with carb cleaner or alcohol worked well but I still had problems with my fingers sliding.
I then used a clean pair of dishwashing gloves and had success because of the extra grip from the rubber. You don't need special tools to do this but I can see how it would make it easier. There's also a video on YouTube of someone replacing theirs.
If you post up what year and model you have someone can probably tell you what you need. Also try looking at the parts applications on the marlin site. I needed the white seat for my 91, 2WD, 5spd but it wasn't listed on the site and nobody here could tell me for sure. I tried calling marlin but they were a man down for quite a while and wouldn't answer the phone. I ended up calling Yotamasters and got the answer along with my parts from them.

It’s common for the factory shift lever ball seat to wear, crumble and disintegrate over time. This often results in a sloppy or loose transmission shifter. The factory seat is soft so it can be squeezed into position. We took a different approach, and machined groves into the sides of our heavy duty seats. Instead of squeezing the seat into place, the groves on each side allows ours to rotate into it’s final position. This allows us to make our seat from stronger, longer lasting USA-made Delrin. Our new heavy duty seats will far out last the stock units and will reduce shifter slop. Two different sizes, one size fits W56-A and W56-B models, the other fits all other 4WD applications as well as all Toyota Celica’s and Supra’s.
The Red seat is for W56-A and W56-B Toyota transmissions.
The White seat is for most other 1981 and newer common Toyota transmission applications with a direct top-mounted shift level, such as L-, G-, W-, and R-series transmissions including the new 6-speed RA60 transmission.
The Blue seat is for the forward shift style transfer case shift handle base of a transmission, such as a G52, G54, W56-C, W56-D, W56-E, R151F, and 1988-95 R150F applications with forward shifting transfer case shift bases. It also fits top shifting chain drive transfer case shift bases.
