shhhhh!!! quiet 22re
shhhh,finally my 22rte is quiet,after engine rebuild with EB rv head 268c cam ,my valve train was very noisy,i try the cyl by cyl method and not so quiet, then the fsm method and make it worse,so decide to try the valve by valve 180* under the lobe,takes some time but glad i did it,this engine is perfect now even with the used but in great condition rockers,so you guys that say you have to live with the noisy valve train,you are not trying hard enough.

So..by 180* under the lobe you mean on the cam side of the rocker? I'm chasing a consistently noisy valve in the back, and may try this if it gets a closer measurement of valve lash. Just trying to get the picture of how it works.

i mean ,when the rocker is in the center of the base circle then take the measurement in the valve tip as always,notice i say "center" of base circle that is the trick or 180* under the lobe, if you use any other part of the base circle you will end with different lash from valve to valve when the rocker meet the center of the base circle.when you align one rocker at the center of the base circle there will always be another valve in the same position so you can do 2 at same time.

Ok. So instead of tdc @ crank,do four, then 180*,do four, just go valve by valve, ensuring I'm at the lowest point of cam or 180* from open, opposite lobe. Think I get it. Have to do this. I've gone down to 7 and 10 on mine, and I think it's my feeler gauge technique that's killin me. Still noisy on #4 exhaust.

you can also try setting crank at 0 degrees where the engine makes full compression on cylinder 1 and 3. turn crank 180 and proceed with cyl 2 and 4. to verify pistons are at top dead center follow the firing order, check distributor cap poll and rotor orientación.

i try both methods,fsm method and cyl by cyl at tdc,usually cyl at tdc is what i use in all engines,but somehow this cam base circle is strange and didnt shut up the valve noise,center of base circle was the best method on this 22r i have found

when the piston is a top dead center, where max compression is achieve, is where the valves are supposed to be fully closed - base circle of the cam. This works good only if you know for sure the cyl has already fired hence checking the dis and rotor orientation.
If you miss a few degrees, then more than likely you won't get it perfect. That's why I say go 0 degrees. verify the distribuitor rotor is pointing at the #1 poll off the distribuitor cap at. adjust cylinder 1 both exhaust and intake. then slightly move the crank to where the dist and rotor point on the next poll - that's if you want to be more precise. the next set should yield at 180 degrees at the crank.

but I could be wrong about finding base circle of the cam using this method. it has been awhile since I built a motor or adjusted valvetrains.
but glad you got it right.
the reasson i decided to troll this post is because I'm having a bit of valvetrain noise in my 22re. i have never in my life opened a 22re motor. have done plenty of pushrod motors though and I keep thinking the ideas are similar.

I just want to add in guys, He's got an EB RV HEAD and CAM from engine builder. The head it self is built to be quiet and thats why Ted's specs for HIS head are .007 and.009. It will be hard to acheive the the quietness of EB's head with a stock head on the motor, not saying it can't be done, just attribute the quietness to the tighter valve lash settings!

I just did a valve train adjustment on my 22r last night, I did it per my Haynes manual. Get it hot then 0.008 and 0.012. Go with Ted's specs; mine sounds like a diesel.

sinful ,i know what you mean,but what i refer is that base circle is a very wide area almost 180*,and if you use the right side or the center or the left you can have different lash cause cam productions or regrind in my case,you have to check what area of the base circle is where you get most lash and set using that place,in my case the center of the base circle,this is critical on noisy engines like ours,in other engine just do it like you prefer. and Orruner even with eb specs i was getting valve noise until i use the method im trying to explain.
