Self made BeadLocks?

Sooooo, talking with a few of my hot-rod buddies we start talking about bead-locks and how there used on the drag strips. Well I was down at the strips and noticed one guy using screws through his rims to hold the beads. Apparently you can use the right size screws to hold your beads together. Any other info on this relating to off roading?

last time I checked, putting holes in your tires and rims won't do much more than help you air down your tires.

Weld on some bead locks and do it right.

The reason some people use screws on drag cars is so the rim doesn't spin inside the tire. Our trucks don't exactly create enough instantaneous acceleration to overcome the friction between the tire and the rim.

I met a guy on the Rubicon doing exactly what your talking about. He had some old steel Mod's and he had 30 or more small Screws going through the rim into the Rubber. It was some old guy, we stopped him and asked him about them and he said he has ran them for a long time. I have never seen another set like that off-road.

Actually that was the problem I had when I air down. All 4 tires were slowly slipping on the rims. By the end of a trail or 2 my wheels were out of balance. I did find a solution though, sort of a poormans bead lock in a tube. http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...5&o=14&fpart=1

One word of warning with this, make sure to let it cure for a week or 2 before you air down and don't even drive on it for about 24 hours. While that stuff is wet it will actually help the tire slip on the rim even at 40 psi!!!

I remember reading somewhere that guys that run deep snow with real wide tires will use the "screw lock" method since they usually run the tire down into single digits when airing down. I'd be a little afraid to do it though since I can't afford another set of tires.

That reminds me of when the guy installing my Dish wanted to put it on the roof. I was like....huh...no thanks on the holes in the roof idea Please just mount it on this brick wall.

A recent Xtreme 4X4 show talked about a do it yourself beadlock kit that runs about $60 a rim. If you're serious about gettin beads, you may check their website.

We used to do that on demolition cars but I don't think I would be doing that on a drag cars.

Although I have seen the screw beadlocks work firsthand in Bonneville. Ballistic sells DIY beadlocks for $40 a wheel.
