Hi Folks

Does anyone know where I could possibly find replacement seat belts for 1986 Toyota SR5 4WD truck ?
Would anyone know if any new model Toyota truck seat belts would work in a 1986 Toyota truck ?

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Just wondering, what is the exact reason for replacement? It is very common for them not to retract well, and they do that all the way to the first gen Tacoma's from personal experience. There is a write-up i've seen detailing how to disassemble it and give it a few extra spins on the spring, and how to remove the strap so it can be cleaned to slide easier.

If yours is cut or missing, what color is your seat belts, and which one(s) do you need? I have had a few trucks from that era.

I may have some out of an 88 4Runner. I bet they are the same design. They are gray. Let me know if you want me to check. I would sure look into upgrading them for no other reason than their age. Seat belts are so government regulated that many are extremely similar if not identical. You'll notice that the seat belt bolts are the only non metric bolts in your truck. At least that I know of. Federally regulated fasteners for US passenger vehicles 7/16-20 with 17mm head.

i was going to check with toyota and see if any newer toyotas use the same belt configuration

I've got all my seatbelts in a bucket. I'll go look in a minute. You know OSHA requires seatbelts in all equipment to be replaced before 3 years of service or 5 years from manufacture date. That's why they have date tags on them. I think that's overkill but there must be something to it. What was the issue with yours by the way?

I vaguely recall that the threads on the seat belt bolts are SAE and not metric.
And thus you COULD source new seat belts.
Or if you re-use the bolts....just order new belts

....that's in occupational applications/equipment/environments or in aftermarket applications (e.g. race harnesses). I've never seen any official recommendations or rules for personal vehicles (factory equipment) that I know of (e.g. from NHTSA). Apparently, some manufacturers even have lifetime warranties on seat belts if they are found to be defective.

Having said that, I think it's something to think about regardless in vehicles this old.

Yea, those rules don't apply to passenger cars. Like you said, it's just something to think about. I know I'm not trusting my little boy's life to something I pulled out of the scrap yard. I have one new seatbelt in my 89 model and it's the one for the seat he sits in.

I completely agree. I would rather go with a new, reputable, aftermarket solution if I couldn't get a new OEM one. .....although in my case, my son never travels in my T4R (only in our newer vehicles). Regardless, I want to make my truck as safe as it can be.
