Running on broken water pump belt = death?

my 87 22R...385K on original engine...driving up a mountain, red light, no place to stop, made it to top of hill, the car overheated, steam coming out, engine still running. Turned it off. The darn belt had broke...the one to the water pump. Ran it maybe 5 min max. Did I cook my engine? I guess I'll find out if I can get a darn tow-truck up Spyrock....sigh....I was going for 400,000 on that engine...

Put a new belt on it and drive. Why tow it when you can do it yourself?

Did I mention it was whining? I'm afraid the water pump went out, and that's what broke the belt...I just had the belts replaced t less than 12 months ago. Actually, it was last April. the other little problem is that I have arthritis in the joints, and wrenching is a little beyond me these days...

Well that makes all the difference. I would say see if a new water pump helps things along with a belt. Thats where I would start at. By buddy who had a 22R got it hot and well it was blowing head gaskets like crazy. Sounds like this isn't the problem he was having.

OP,

I renamed your thread - next time please try and be more descriptive to help others who try and search for this later on.

Good luck with your motor!

I had a 22R that had a water pump fail from the timing chain wearing through the case... overheated badly/chocolate milkshake everything... new waterpump/timing chain/engine flush/new rad and all was well... event happened at about 375K give or take and truck was still running strong at 714K or so when I sold it 4.5 yrs later... those engines are bullet proof. 5mins at overheat is nothing... do an engine flush and oil change (just to be safe since you may have some sludge in the oil from cooking it a bit) and all should be fine. [after you change the belt at least and maybe check/change the water pump]

dodged the bullet once again...

So, after AAA left me high on the mountain, Kelley Auto of Legget sent a truck up, changed the belt, added coolant, and tested the water pump on the spot. Runs good now, a little noisy. Thanks Aviator, I will perform the maintenance, and prolly have the valves reset...
