RPM's drop to 0 and shut off my 4Runner at a stop!!

Its been doing this for a while and then had engine problems (blew head gasket) Got that fixed.
And its now running again but once it warms up and im driving itll run low rpm's and especially when im getting to a stop itll drop to about 500 and once i stop it will just die. I then have to turn it back on and keep the rpm's up.
So now when i drive my truck and im coming to a stop i put the truck in neutral, then hold down the break to slow down and hold the gas at the same time to keep my rpm's up. once im stopped i just hold the throttle until the light turns green or when im ready to move and drop it back in drive and continue on.
It becomes a real head ache when coming up to a yield or in alot of traffic.
Having to put in neutral hold brake and gas then once its clear put it in drive again. It feels like im driving standard but alot more complicated

Im thinking this is a vacuum leak somewhere but where??
This really gets annoying to do a million different things just to stop and keep my truck on.

Any and all opinions or tips would be very much appreciated.

Dirty throttle plate? Use wife's toothbrush. Smoke it for vacuum leak.

I really don't know. How can I check that? Is that the idle adjusting thing next to the opening for the air pipe into the plenum?

Dirty throttle plate? Use wife's toothbrush.
Where can i find the throttle plate?

Smoke it for vacuum leak.
Is that the Seafoam treatment???

IMHO it sounds like the TCC solenoid is stuck on. When on, the converter is in lockup and the motor and trans are running 1:1. So when you come to a stop the converter isnt unlocking and in turn works like a standard. Drop the pan and replace the TCC solenoid and replace the filter since your there anyway. Top off with fluid and you should be golden. Going to need between 4-7 qts of trans fluid.

My 89 22re truck used to do the exact same thing. It would also do it around turns leading to some close calls. I replaced the idle air control valve and it fixed it.

The obvious things to check would be to look for vacuum leaks, check that the intake duct boots are not cracked and check and set the idle and timing. A failing igniter can also cause an issue at idle where the engine dies but it's usually accompanied with a trouble code and drivability issues like random pinging and an inability to rev the engine up due to inconsistant timing.
I'd probably rule out the TCC solenoid since you can keep the engine running by giving a bit of the throttle, but it is something to keep in mind.

does your truck idle rough? mine did the same thing and i replaced the mass air flow sensor and that replaced it.

Several threads going on right now about the TPS and testing adjusting it. Also google 4crawler cheap tricks. Lots of good info on there about testing the tps, and how to do it. Also search on here for the factory service manual for you truck. It has the info on how to test each of the items mentioned above. Easy to ready, only going to need a basic set of hand tools, multimeter. Will end up saving you a lot of money.
