Round peg, Square hole. Shifter Lever Problems

Here is the delemma:
I understand I need to cut the area out so the shifter will fit. But, the shifter has a square mounting plate and i feel like 1st 3rd and 5th gears will be halfway through my stereo faceplate.
How can i fix this?

Heat up and bend the shift lever, just make sure you don't run into the transfer lever when you are done.

that's what I was thinking

what are you doing an auto to manual swap?

in my original stick in my 91, the shift comes within 3-4 inches of the stereo area, so yeah there's not a whole lotta room to play with anyhow

plus the stick doesn't stick straight up; they already have a bend backwards in them a little

Bingo. Rather something like that. Both were manuals the original out of my 87 runner went south, so I picked up this one out of an 86 truck. I was told it would sit a bit forward because the trucks have benches? I didn't realize this much though. I dont know what eaither trans was as I don't know the id right off hand.

I remember seeing a really good link to a site with all the pictures and ID info but, I have been searching for it for a few now and can't seem to find it.
I also remember seeing a thread about a guy doing the same swap but, again, no luck finding it a second time round.

I did the same swap and had no problem with the shifters. They were forward but did not hit anything. They are both W56 trans but different models.

G52/54 84-88' are twin stick, use a 8 bolt center section, 6 bolt gear t/case pattern, 21 spline output.
W56 85-88' (single stick), 89-95' (twin stick), 10 bolt center, 6 bolt t/case, 21 spline

The first photo shows a top shifting transfer case and transmission. Notice the tcase shifter comes out of the top of the tcase. The transmission has just one shifter. Notice there are no forks on the front of the tcase.

The second photo is a forward shift transfer case. Notice the blockoff plate on top of the case. This unit is shifted through two rails that connect to the transmission. A forward shift transmission like this one has two shifters, one for the tranny and one for the tcase.

My original trans and tcase were top shift ala the first photo. I still have the tcase from that.
My new trans and tcase are forward shift ala the second photo, But with a single piece plate joining the shifter ans tcase shifter. I think the guy said it was an r150 and he'd swapped to an "f" because it was stronger. Is this possible? My reccolection is a bit unclear.

My biggest issue however is how to mate the shifter from the old trans (square plate ala the first photo) to my new trans (the photo I posted). As you can see there is just a corner of my torch standing by if neccecary.

"f" as in r150f means it's set up for a transfer case, as opposed to the 2wd r150 tranny. I don't believe there (could be wrong) was ever a r151 2wd, they're all r151f.

So I trimmed the floorpan with my dremel (I was suprised how quickly it cut) and got the shifter in place. Nothing hits the radio but the mount for my shifter is square and the trans is round. Am I going to have to look for a truck shifter?

Yep...notice in the 1st pic i posted, the W56. It has the same 4 bolt base sitting on top of the 6 bolt shifter plate...this is the shifter you have

I dont have much experience with the G series tranny, which you have now, but it looks like you'll have to hunt a G- series shifter down

i have a g58 and instead of that square plate there is a hollow cylinder with cut outs for the left and right tabs, (i saw them in the photo), (similar to the way a turn signal light goes into its socket. it has a spring to it and pushes in by hand.

Junk yard, mines a 94 runner 4cyl 5spd 4x4 to help you look

did you not get the shifter when you got the tranny?

Hunt around for the right shifter. I'd phone up the toy wrecking yards and see what they've got.

while looking at your picture i had a thought to add in about how id cover the hole. if you re set the cover to mount in the new proper place. i would think about taking some heavy rubber and makeing a piece to fill in the rear now open part. Just a little thought. Otherwise you are going to get a ton (more, haha, yotas are loud) noise through an open hole
