Roof Rack help

My 1990 4runner does not have a roof rack, it completely smooth on top. There is a roof rack on at a local junk yard I can nab but will I able to put it on? What problems might I encounter?

You need to use something like a nutsert or rivnut. Watch the clip (you don't need the fancy power tool, you can buy a manual one in a kit).

Silicone the rivnuts before you install the bolts. Voila.

Dat's it. What the factory used, take your time & use some antisieze so you can take it off every year & clean the junk out that's trying to rust through your roof.

How tough is it to get above the headliner to maybe do something a little nicer?

That pic could be off of my 4Runner as far as anyone could tell: white with no rack.

The headliner is in good condition and I don't really want to do anything to it. I'll find something to add the nuts down in there.

You don't need to do anything with the headliner with the rivnuts. You drill a very shallow hole, insert the rivnut, fasten it with the tool (very much like a pop rivet), and repeat.

Check Harbor Freight, maybe they have something similar. I picked one up here for about $20.

Yeah it's pretty much that easy. I installed a Wilderness Rack on my first gen and it was crazy easy.

Just put it where ever you want it.

Does it really matter where the factory put it?

What DeathCougar said. Place it where you like it. I think the factory location is biased towards the rear.

I think the factory put all of them really close to the back because of the sun roof option. Theres enought weight back there. If ya dont have a sun roof slide that baby foward a little!

Well I'll take some pictures and write some things up. I won't get to it for a couple of days though.
