RF1A problem

Hey guys, brand new here. I have recently inherited an 89 toyota standard cab DLX pickup with a ton of mods. One of the issues I have been having is that the RF1A (I think) transfer case has been very loud and it gets hot very easily. After looking around I have found that 75w90 is the common gear oil that needs to be in this. When I pulled the FILL plug on the transfer case ATF came pouring out. Yes, I said ATF. After pulling the bottom drain plug it looks like about 3 quarts or so in the drain pain. I can't ask the previous owner obviously as he recently passed away. Has anybody ever heard of something like this? Am I correct in filling the transfer case now with about 1.8 qts (just to the bottom of the fill plug) with 75w90 gear oil? Sorry, i've searched the forum and scoured the net, with no luck. Thanks to any and all help!

yes refill it with gear oil. Is it an auto trans? if so could be leaking on rear output shaft seal into tranfercase, if man. trans id say was filled wrong by prev. owner. wouldnt hurt to check/change the trans fluid either or diffs, engine, brakes.... lol good luck with your toy

Once I thought it was ATF shooting out of the fill hole I tightened it back down, checked the tranny level, drained the transfer case and checked the tranny again, it hasn't changed. I don't think the tranny is leaking. Vehicle had a history of a ˟˟˟˟ty mechanic working on it. I haven't put gear oil back in the transfer case yet due to the crappy weather. I'll let you know how it turns out.
