Reverse won't stay engaged

Transmission rebuilt by T&M Transmission Exchange two years ago. Will shift into all gears and will run just fine forward and in 4 wheel drive. Pops out of reverse after a foot or two travel. Can't be held in or grinds real badddd.

Whats the deal?

Your shifter bushings are probably bad. Order a set from Marlin Crawler. I did, love them. My problem was a high pitched squeel in fifth at highway speed. Rubber bushing was completely gone. Order the lower and upper bushing cheap insurance I think it was less than 30 for both including shipping.

Thank you for your posts. Please advise how the shifter bushings prevent the transmission from staying engaged in reverse.

if your bushings are worn too much it won't engage the gear properly.

Did those bushings fix the problem? In the world of VW bugs that same failure (not staying in reverse) indicated a bent shift fork.

I contacted t&m and they advised it was a tooth or two that is broke off the reverse gear. Do to the fact I can run the truck forward with no issue staying engaged, I agree it is a tooth issue. How ever I am not sure how that is possible as I have treated the truck very well and don't put it into situations to break anything. I was stuck a lot in the snow the last two weeks of February running my trapline. I run in 2wd til stuck then lock them in 4wd. Technically not stuck in my book, but..... the trans is w56. Suppose to be tougher than the rest. So it looks like the trans has to come out. Just wish I have the knowledge base to tear it down. Sounds like the reverse gear only needs replaced. Anybody with pictures please help.
