Reverse light question/repair.

Did a lot of searching the past few days and have not been able to find an answer or help. I have an 86 runner, automatic, Reverse lights work rarely. Trying to find out where to start. Any wiring diagrams or other trouble shooting idea's would be great. Both bulbs are good so I know it isn't that. All help and suggestions welcome.

Not sure as it changed yr by yr, if you have a manual transmission the reverse switch should be on the side, screwed into the case. Jump the wires together if the lights come on you got it.

there is an adjuster on the pass side of the transmission. Don't have any pics, but I couldn't get it adjusted when my lights would hardly ever come on so I just wired up some fog lights in the back for reverse lights.

I am going to put on some lights for extra lighting, but have to eventually fix back-up lights for inspection

Tried to trace wires with no luck. Did find that the rear defrost wires had broken free from the connecters. Fixed that now back window only works with key. Trying to fix one thing leads to having more things to fix!!! Still no luck with the back-up lights

what year/make? go to an auto parts store website, or search google, find a pic of the switch and match it to a similar switch on the tranny. if there is no power coming out of the switch (assuming you had it in reverse when checking the wires) replace the switch, it's possible it's trash after hundreds of thousands of times of going into reverse over the years.
