Resolved: 22RE Intermittent lugging below 2000 rpm
I had been struggling with this issue for over a year... my 22re was intermittently, but frequently ridiculously sluggish below 2,000 rpm. I could often get around it a bit by revving it before letting the clutch out but if I didn't or someone else was driving and didn't know, it was pretty scary if any traffic was around. Off idle, the rig would creep at about 3-4 mph until the rpms built up to 2k (taking about 7-10 seconds). At that point, the motor would come to life and take off with full strength.
If you've seen my build thread, you know that I had replaced all of my sensors with OE and replaced/rebulit the entire fuel system in the past year. The only exception was the AFM which is not available new. Over the past year, I had gone through 3 'refurbished' AFMs. Each new (refurb'd) one I ordered tested out as either having a bad carbon sweep with a good temp sensor or having a good carbon sweep with a bad temp sensor. Two of the AFMs still had the OE yellowed (aged) silicone intact around the black plastic lid (undisturbed). I finally had a local shop take two of them and combine the good parts from two to make one good one - well that was the plan.
After installing the combo AFM, the issue seemed to improve a little but quickly came back fully. I even played with the AFM spring and mixture screw with a wideband O2 sensor hooked up to confirm I was at 14.7 but that it did not make a difference.
I decided to live with it for a while but finally gave in and gave one more refurbished AFM a try. This one came from Fuel Injection Corporation (via Amazon). I noticed immediately that the OE black plastic lid had been replaced with a new one with Fuel Injection Corp's name on it. That was reassuring that they actually cracked the lid and did some work inside. Then it checked out with an ohm meter and registered a 14.7 air/fuel ratio right out of the box without any adjustment. A quick test drive and subsequent trips have confirmed that this fixed the issue. It's great to have the rig driving great once again.
Lessons learned:
- You cannot buy a 'new' AFM
- The internal parts (carbon sweep) are not replaceable with new parts even by the rebuilders - they try to find used ones in good enough shape to serve as a rebuild
- Not all rebuilds are rebuilt equally. I was especially disappointed by A-1 Cardone. Theirs was a complete dud and the silicone on the lid was undisturbed from the factory. Seemed all they did was clean and paint it and charge over $200.

I just looked at the link you posted and noticed it is just down the road from me. I am going to see what business it is to see what else they may sell. If you got a number or company name, would you PM it to me?

I am having a lot of trouble with my truck stuttering while idling, especially when the AC is on. It never dies but kind of fights for it's life, and the AC stops blowing cold air because the engine is trying to keep up so bad. Would you think that this is a related issue? I'm not sure if it could be, but I'm not sure what an AFM is either so I guess I need to read up.
