Recent 3VZE Rebuild - power issues
I recently rebuilt my 3VZE. Initially it didn't start and didn't have a lot of time to troubleshoot. I had to go on an extended trip and needed her running when I returned, So I took her into the garage. Turns out I had the timing off and that got fixed.
But I have been noticing some power issues. Plus the Mechanic told me another issue when starting in the cold:
-He said it was stalling out in cold conditions. It would start and run for a short bit and then die. It would do this a couple of time before it wouldn't stall. When its warm it runs fine and started fine when it was warmer. - I have not had this happen to me yet since I got back to my truck and has been cold a few nights. I'm hoping this issue is done but its could be some good back info leading to a lack of power problem that is now happening. I've also notice once and a while after it has bee running the idle dives a bit and seems like it is getting on the edge of stalling but dosent.
The main problem I am noticing is that the engine has slightly less power than it did. I am running 33s, and it has 216K miles so that has something to do with it overall but it had some more juice before I had to do the rebuild. The truck is a bit sluggish and can only do about 65 ish (maybe close to 70 with the tire size differential) but that is in fourth gear pretty much mashing the pedal down. And basically forget about 5 gear unless it is down hill hwy. So I'm dumping fuel and not getting quite enough power out of it. It does run fairly smooth.
The first thing im going to check after reading up on some of the common issues on the site are :
-Check for vacuum leaks with an unlit torch on every seal, gasket, and hose with a cold engine idling. Seems the the most likely thing right now.
- Replace the O2 sensor.. this can reduce timing causing performance to suffer, right?
- if those don't change anything: check TPS, ECT, VAFM sensors.
What else am I forgetting on my check list that could be giving me these problems?
