Ok, so I got the 33re in my 87' 4runner put back together, but i can't get it to start. if I hold it all the way to the floor, it'll backfire (to the point that it blew the air-intake pipe off the manifold). Help please? I tried to play with the timing a bit, but that didn't help.

recheck everything is plugged in and vacuum lines are good

well that's one problem...I don't think I have all the vacuum lines hooked up right and I can't find a decent diagram.

is there a diagram under your hood?
or maybe a friend's hood you can pop and copy his?
sounds like your timing is way out if your backfiring threw the intake your probably 180 deg. off

well the hood one is pretty mangled. I have a friend with an 87' but it's a 22reT. He just bought another parts runner, I'll have to see what year that is.

How could I have made the timing 180* wrong? I put the distributer in exactly where it was.

Also, there is a huge cluster- of left over plugs under the manifold, but I have double and triple checked and I don't' see anymore places to plug them in...pretty sure they are for the AC compressor that is no longer there.

it sounds like you installed your distributor wrong, proally 180 off.

It probably won't run until you get the vacuum lines right... Do you still have an under hood diagram?

The pop and backfire seem to indicate a timing problem. As mentioned are you sure you're not 180 degrees out?

Yeah I'm guessing you will have no luck starting it without all the hoses hooked up. Take pictures of the ones you are unsure of and post them on here. I know where most of them go just by looking at them, as do many others on here. Once you get your vacuum lines good then worry about your timing, etc.

Also, with the distributer, I found I had better luck setting the engine to TDC and then inserting it at 12 o'clock (it will rotate to about 11). When I tried to put it back how I took it out I ended up being off a tooth.

The a/c compressor should only take 1 plug. If there is a whole cluster of unused connectors, I would start looking for unplugged sensors and whatnot. I usually try to use the length of the wire on a particular plug help me find out about where to look for the empty connector on the engine side.

From what you previously wrote, I thought the thing was 180 out like everyone else, but definately make sure all necessary comkponents are hooked up.

ok, so if looks like the timing was 180* off, fixed that. There are 4 wiring connectors with no where to go. I have looked/felt every where on the upper and lower intake manifold, and there's no where else to plug anything in.

Thanks to deserthound I got the fuel pressure regulator vacuum lines hooked up correctly, but there is still more hoses left that I can't figure out. I'm looking for a picture on an 87' 22re w/ AC as we speak.

You don't see the equivalent wires/connectors hanging in any of my pictures? Could they be the connectors to the transmission? How about the AAV under the manifold. Is it plugged in? What shape and color are the remaining connectors? Also, if one end of the questionable vacuum hoses are hooked up, what are they hooked up to? Maybe we can figure out where the other end should go from your description.

ok so you fliped it 180 and it still dont start??? did you put the plug wires in the right order???? is the battery hooked up? is the mafm pluged in?? (mass air flow meter)

Ok, so I fixed the timing, and I got the fuel pressure lines hooked up right, and it starts now. It doesn't really like to idle by itself tho. I'll get some pics tomorrow of the left over vacuum lines and the wiring connectors.
