To rebuild on not to rebuild , advice please

Hey looks like it worked, so hers is my story I bough my so a 1994 pick up with a four cylinder , it has 220,000 miles. It blew a head gasket about 4 weeks after I bough it. I now in the middle of replacing the head gasket. When I pulled out the head bolts two of them appeared to be dry and gunked up with no oil on them. Is this a sigh of other problems in side the bottom of the engine. Motor was knocckinh a little when I bought it but only at start up. then it would quiet down, Could this have been from the coolant being in the cylinder at start up. It was smoking at start up . With this information should I just replace head gasket or do a total rebuild. I gave 5000 for the truck too muck I suppose by my son wanted a Toyota and they are hard to find. My son is in college and cash is tight so I want to make a good decision here. The site looks like good place to get some good advice on where to go from here. Please help me prove my wife wrong she says I was craze to buy this truck , but I always heard about how the toyota's are tough and last for ever. So should I rebuild of replace head gasket and shave head only
