Reasonable cost of timing chain replacement on 89 4runner
My new to me 4runner has 119K miles and I know that the timing chain/guides have not been replaced. Is it worth replacing the guide/chain now?
I am getting quotes over $2000 to do the timing chain replacement which sounds high to me, considering that is aftermarket parts and not at a dealer. They are telling me that the labor to do the timing chain is almost the same as to do a R&R of the motor. I am in Miami, Fl. Should I look elsewhere for a cheaper price, let it go till there is a problem, or is this reasonable?
Any recommendations for a service facility in South Florida are welcome.

call the toyota dealer and see how much they want, I would guess that a new chain, water pump and head gasket on a 22RE should be in the neighborhood of $1200-1500 at the dealer.

maj, first off, I'd say 2k is high. I just did mine with parts from engnbldr, new timing cover, new VC gasket, new hoses, and misc RTV and fluids and seriously cannot be more than $300. Not sure what the book time is on these, but what could it be at most, $1000 in labor, so MAYBE $1300.
If you have a place to do the work, I'd be glad to lend a hand. It's fairly time consuming, and we have the heat and the rain here to deal with, but it's doable.
The other thing I can offer you is that my buddy owns the Precision Tune in Coral Springs, that's north Broward so it might be a bit of a drive for you. I don't know what he would charge, but no question he does good work and will stand behind his work.

Thanks for the offer. I don't think that this needs to be done immediately, I could wait until this winter when the weather's nicer. The problem with getting the truck worked on in Coral Springs is I would have no way to get home Palmetto Bay if the truck has to stay at the shop. Going back to pick it up is just as difficult.
Does the motor need to come out, that is what one of the shops said. (Another said that the timing chain NEVER needs replacement, won't be going there) I don't have an engine hoist and don't really want to buy one for one project. Given the price of the whole rebuild kit, I would have to rebuild the motor when the labor charge to remove the engine for just the timing chain was 19 hrs ($1800).

No way, motor does not need to be removed, and if your guides are intact you don't even have to drop the oil pan. I was swapping diffs so I dropped my diff and my oil pan to retrieve the bits of plastic guide that had fallen in. You can do this in your driveway, no special tools required.
If it's not making noises (believe me you can hear the chain rubbing the timing cover if the guides are gone), I would leave it alone for a little while. Spend your energy, time, and money on other things. Next time you take the valve cover off for adjusting the valves just take a look down the chain and you'll see the guides on each side. If they are both there you should be good for a while.

My friend just had his done at a shop in Ft. Collins and it was $250.00 in parts and the labor was $300.
Don't need to take the motor out of the truck.
Don't need to take off the head.
Only if the guides are broke do you need to take off the oil pan
Do need to take out the radiator.
Can be done in one day

i just ordered my parts from engn bldr.com today. timing chain with stel rails, new cover, oil pump, and full gasket set was $202 to my door. my wife found an 89 fsm on line for $150. from the research i have done, this could be done in a day with normal tools. if you have access to tools and/or a garage i would go that route an save your self $1500.
in my opinion $2k is robbery.
i also go a quote from the local napa of $35 for a lifetime water pump.
good luck
