Rearend knock

Rearend knock
Hi everybody, so I'm not gonna lie, I like to go fast! And I know most of you would say that you drive a 94 4Runner. You can't go fast, but trust me, she will scoot. Anyhow, while racing and playing around the other night I noticed that my rearend was kinda ticking or "popping" when it was in gear and the clutch wasn't pressed. If I'm in gear going down the road and press the clutch the knocking stops. Please help!

to me, this is the sound people describe when talking about lunchbox lockers - noise/clicking and/or jerking when going around turns in gear vs silence when coasting/disengaged clutch and turning. since you're "racing" your rig it could really be anything - could be ujoint, rear differential, bearings, splines, you name it.
do some further investigation and try to pinpoint where it is coming from (front, middle, rear of vehicle) so we can help better. good thing to do might be to jack up the rear of your 4runner, put it in neutral and spin the rear axle by hand to see if you get any noises and note which part they come from. also wouldn't be a bad idea to check and make sure there is actually some gear oil inside your differential. i'm sure others will have some tests to do.
but seriously though..."racing a 2nd gen 4runner" hahahaha that's a good one.
