Rear tire carrier suggestions

Just curious to see what other people there have done as a rear tire carrier for their 4Runners..

My 91 4Runner has had an LPG cylinder installed where my tire used to live so now I need to work out what to do with it

Thanks

u can get a tire swing carrier off another 4runner and put that on and bolt in place and done.... i put one on my rig and then put one on my buddys 95.. now for the tailgate part if u can get one matching ur paint and in good condition u can just swap it out, or u can find someone to build u a bumper with tire carrier on it. do a search there is many threads about this.

Mak-92, Is that a custom built rack? or is that off of early mod 4runner? Looks great.

Thats a sweet rig Mak92!
Im located in Australia so really im stuck with ARB and their massively inflated prices. I dont want to go putting too much money in the old gal so it looks like getting a swing tire carrier off a hliux surf / 4runner would be the best option.

Has anyone had any luck or uses the hitch mounted type wheel carrier?

Fightman80 has been using a hitch tire carrier for a long time, and it works well for him. On a 3rd gen 4runner, but same concept. The only problem with this setup is getting into the back hatch up or tailgate down becomes a hassle. But you can't beat it's simplicity. Heres a pic of his setup

If you can find or design one that drops down to access the back, it would make things alot easier.

I really like that bumper/tire carrier by TAG. I just did their configurator...$890 ouch!! Then $320 to deliver to a home address in CA...double ouch!! If I can find a business address to deliver this to, then the shipping is $150. Not so bad, but $890 for the bumper BUT it sure is puhrtty!!.

Another option I have been contemplating is a hitchmounted swing away from tiregate
http://www.tiregate.com/hg_series_0.shtml

For me, I guess my problem with this one is that I have a trail-gear rear bumper. I wonder if the built in 2inch hitch is as strong as a class 2 rating. Trail-Gear's website says that this bumper is not rated for towing, so I called and explained what I was planning. They did not want to give me an answer

edit:
the tiregate swing arm hitch mount is $893 for similar accessories as the TAG, and it requires a class 3 rating hitch.
www.4crawler.com's bumper and swing arm tire carrier adds up to (for similar accessories) $910. I guess the TAG one is starting to look a little better as far as the price goes.

Build your own bumper:

Make it exactly how you want it and have a blast doing it!

Tiregate clone

Here is my Tailgate clone I made a couple years back. worked good, I posted a bunch of pictures of it. I incorporated a ladder for access to the roof rack. I was into mine for about $400 with a 5th wheel and tire.

Are you shipping it to your house? Might try and find a freight depot near you, might save you some cash.

KMA is garbage. Boo.
