Rear lights problem, need help asap

Hi all !

I got a 1991 toyo pickup, v6 3.0L 4wd.

My parking lights stopped working a few days ago. It already had a trailer connector kit (adapter for a trailer with brakes) + 2 spotlights for backup when I bought it last year.
Brakes, turn signals and backup lights are working fine.

I changed the bulbs.. nothing.

I went under to check it out, and now I don't know how to correctly connect the wires to get everything working fine. I tried something and now when I turn on the left turn signal, the brake light starts to ''click'' (on/off on/off...) with the flasher, but the other side does the same thing, the brake light flashes. But I still don't have any parking lights ...

On the adapter/converter :

Brake = red wire
Right turn signal = green
Left turn signal = yellow
Tail (parking) = brown

On the bulb socket :

Brake and parking (same bulb) = 2 wires = green and green/red
Right turn signal = green/yellow
Backup = red

Brake light and parking light bulbs are in one bulb with two elements. Not sure why you went to rewiring. Do you have front parking lights? Or is it just rear?

Did you check the fuses and just did not include that in your post??

Changed all the blubs in your dash as well??

It has happened from a massive electrical surge that all the blubs blew out at once.

Very rare though


It would really check out your fuse if it opens again I would look for damaged wires causing the short.

Yes I know its only one bulb, and yes I have front ''daylight'', rear is the only problem, and I went to wiring cause I checked the fuses and everything is okay..

My fuses are okay, what you mean by changing all the dash bulbs ?

It hapenned once on mine, my speedo//etc just blew out and I had nothing except the 4wd light that worked...

Electric is not my strong point, but I have seen several problems with trailer lights. Did they cut and plice the trailer kit into your harness? Also on the back of the tail light assembly, all of the lights share a common ground and is just crimped together with a little wire crimp. It is a poor design. I remove those crimps and solder, and then heat shrink the splice. The wire is a white wire with a black stripe.

Once I get the wires fixed back to the way the factory have them I then install a Plug and Play kit. Solves a lot of problems and works great. The kit is about $20.

Its PN# 43315. Local parts store can order it.

Agree with Terry. Many people do a hack job on trailer wiring. Suspect that first,

BUT still inspect your wiring and compare with schematic. And do not just mess with wiring without verifying with schematic or with a volt-meter; You could end up breaking more than what your fix. We have no choice about it. IF we want to learn to troubleshoot our own trucks, gotta understand schematics. Else, take it to the stealers.

Got multi-meter? I could not stress this enough: Next to our senses (sight, hearing, feel, common...) that's the best tool for troubleshooting classics. I have a cheap HF one to stay in the truck, ' cause I don't want my nice Fluke for the rough and tumble truck work.

Tell the truth drive over one Fluke Meter the replacement only gets used on the high paying jobs
