rear differential is leaking from the front seal - pinion seal

My rear differential is leaking from the front seal. I can find lots of places to get the seal for pretty cheap but what should I call it while I'm ordering it. It's the seal that heads to the drives shaft.

Nice job guys. I'll surf later for the part. It looked like an easy job and from what I read, I should be ready to have to do axle seals soon. It is an old truck.

i've never replaced one on a 'Yota, but i did on my S10 and i had to use a puller to get the pinion flange off....

i don't know if you have a puller or not, but advance auto will rent 'em out. not sure of the price though.

EDIT: get atleast 1 u-joint, the one that meets up to the flange might break when you drop the driveshaft

that seal is so easy to change. just undo that pinion nut. mark the flange so it will keep the driveshaft balancced . then just take the seal out. i would also get another pinion nut. my nut is all screwed up cuz last person changed it before but i re used it

make sure you unstake the pinion nut before baking it off. 30mm socket by the way.

Replace your diff breather while your at it. A plugged breather is a known culprit of a blown pinion seal.

My seal is blown. Have to put fluid in it every 2 to a week. Depending on driving the truck. I just wanted to know what type of puller do I need? Thinking of changing the breather with a extension that I been hearing. Where can I find this at? I search for it but if you know where to find it pls input a website to look for. My breather doesn't look clog but I may suspect the hole must be. I am thinking of replacing it all this Sunday.

Do anyone here know how to balance the drive shaft ratio? Since I be removing the drive shaft I could also tackle this togheter. Back when I swap my tranny to 5 speed. It had cause a vibrate at 90 mph but recently it had stop. I think I may need a balance but how can I balance it by DIY? Do I need to take it to the shop for this? Thank you in advance as always... with pride n' glory...

Here's a write-up on replacing the pinion seal.

Here's a write-up on installing a differential breather extension.

If the driveshaft needs balanced you'll need to take it to a driveshaft shop.

It could be alot of things making it vibrate at 90 mph. Like the wheels and tires needing balanced too.

Do you drive at 90 mph alot? Just curious. Because most folks don't, atleast most folks that drive Toyota trucks that is.

Dont listen to this. Just get the seal. Everything comes right apart.

My pinion seal leaked, replaced it, then 3 months later stated leaking again. After 224k the pinion bearing was starting to go. In your case, it could be just the seal. But be looking for other possible issues.

i would clean out the breather,re-fill and see if it leaks. both my 86 pickup and my 89 4runners breather was clogged ,cleaned em and they havent leaked since. if its clogged the rear end will build up pressure and blow out fluid!!

Thank you, Mudhippy...

I needed that. Just got the pinion seal today and the breather was in special order. It could be the tire problem since it is nearly due. Probably I will get me a set of 4 BFGoodrich end of this dec. E-brake and smog check is next so have to take that quarter out again. Might pour a gallon of E85 to help the smog check.

Nope. I only speed up to 90 mph if other driver are pushing me to it. Here in CA. On the freeway they drive around that speed. I cap it at 70 at most. 90 mph is too scary for this 4runner...
