if you wanted to salvage the backing plate you could cut the flange on the end of the axle *has the wheel studs* down so that the backing plate fits over it.
the backing plate and bearing case are two separate parts.. New bearing cases are $53 @ the dealer. not sure on backing plates.

I'm don't mean cut the bearing itself, though if it's getting replaced you don't need to be carefull not to. Just cut the bearing retainer ring off, if you don't have the SST to get it off.
The bearings aren't no where near as snug a fit as that retainer ring, I was able to to knock them off relatively easily by the method I described once I got the retainers off.
Doing such to salvage that backing plate and bearing case should work too. I mean cut the retainer, then hold the backing plate steady and beat(broken end)the axle stub out of the bearing.

This link has a couple ways to get the bearings off. I haven't tried either, but maybe they will help you.

One cool thing about the disc swap I did, is that you no longer need the backing plates at all. So the extra set of axles and bearings I got from the salvage yard... well, I just cut the backing plates off and can slip in an entire new axle/ bearing assembly very quickly. Just undo the for axle to housing bolts and I am good to go. Great for a trail repair should I ever need one.
Mind you, I'd still have to figure out how to get the broken end out of the housing... but all in all a simpler way to go.

I'd just get a complete junkyard rear axle assembly and swap it in. Keep what's left of yours for spare parts. That way you wouldn't have to worry about new bearings and what not, and it would only be $100-150 total, and you'd have a nearly complete set of spares
