Rattle noise from engine
Hey guys, I haven't been around here due to being busy with other things the past few months, but I'm hoping one of you guys can help me.
Here's the situation: when my truck has gotten warmed up to normal operating temperature, it will ping (or perhaps a very brief rattle?) intermittently when the throttle is opened. For example, if I'm in 5th gear driving 60mph with slight throttle, I will hear no noise. If I come up near a slight hill and need to open the throttle up either 1/2 way or full throttle, it starts pinging pretty badly. The ping occurs intermittently, at its worst perhaps as often as every 5 seconds when the throttle is widely opened. It's not just a single ping noise though -- sometimes it'll make two or three pings very closely together.
The noise doesn't exist when the car has not been warmed up. I can open the throttle all the way and it won't ping or rattle at all.
But, it does make me wonder if another noise on startup is related. Sometimes recently when I start up the truck, it sounds almost like I can hear the timing chain for about half a second until the engine gets up to full idling RPM.
Does any of this sound familiar, and if so, does anyone have a suggestion for me?
Thanks guys.

I'm sportin the 22r and mine does the same thing as well. I have calmed it down considerably by changing to a 180* thermostat from the stock 195*, getting the LC open element air cleaner adapter and air cleaner, many Seafoam treatments, and always running "Plus" gasoline. It is still there every now and then when it is really hot outside though. I would say next time you fill up try to run a tank of plus gasoline though it and see if it still does it.

Thanks for the response. I'll try out the plus gas. I know that higher octane typically prevents pinging. I'll have to play around with the timing a bit to see if advancing or retarding it will get rid of the noise.
What is the advantage of that thermostat? Can you explain why it helps?

About the thermostat: I got the idea from a thread someone started here. Basically the lower temperature thermostat keeps the engine about 15* cooler all the time. I figured if it pings the worst when it is hot outside and not as bad when it is cooler then it must be related to temperature in some way. The thermostat did make a big difference though. As far as the specifics of why the engine will ping less when it is cold, i honestly dont know the reason.
