R452 5th Gear in R150/R151

I Have an 06 R151 trans I am going to attempt to switch the tailhousing from my R150 so I can use my v6 adapter to R1FA and swap the R452 5th gear into the R151 for a 30% overdrive ratio. 5th gear on the R452 is .69 as oppose to the R150/R151 of .83. There are some differences between the years of transmissions. Here are some part numbers and links.

Trans 5th gear
R452 33336-25030 counter 33046-25030 for R151 Gearbox 96’-05’? (Not sure if the years are correct)
R150 (pre-95) are 33046-25012(with Bearing 90364-28009 or 90364-30009) and 33336-25030
I cannot confirm any of the above, this is just information I have found in the interwebs.

My gear from the 06’ R151

Comparison of other gears as shown in the pirate thread, my 06 R151 matches the 09’ 5th gear, and not the Dyna R452 setup. I am hoping my R150 has the 3 clutch keys for the synchro. But I haven’t torn into the r150 yet.

If anyone has a pic of the r150 pre 96 5th gear setup please post up.

This could prove to be interesting, if you can do it this could be a great OD option

Have you dug around the web for a parts fiche image with an exploded view of the parts in question?

Also it should work as long as the distance from center to center is the same and the flange for the shift fork are the same. Other wise you'll have to swap forks too.

I have scoured the interwebs, and only fine the part drawings we are all familiar with that have no detail. If you have links to pictures of the parts please post.

I am going to try to pull off this mod using the '06 R151, but I am 99% sure I could also use my '93 R150 using the 33046-25012 instead of the 33046-25030. I am hoping to get a look at the 33046-25020, as i believe this may be the post '96 to '06 part number...but it could have just been superseded by 33046-25030. The difference between all of these parts is the bore and synchro.

I know this is an old thread, but did you ever finish the 5th gear swap? I've been trying to finish this on my early 90s r150. I was able to get the main gear through amayama, but no luck on the counter gear. Do you still have any of the gears you didn't use?

I have not made any progress with this yet.
Parts...
Have you tried megazip.net or Partsouq.com for the parts?

I'm waiting to hear back from megazip. It shows up in their database, but they've told me they are waiting for a reply from the manufacturer, so I'm not too optimistic on that one. Going to check with partsouq, wasn't familiar with them.

Not available through megazip or partsouq. Amayama is showing the later 25030 gear to be available, but from reading online I don't think I could make it work in my older style box. I have a spare r150 on the floor in my garage if photos/dimensions would help. All my searching has led to "got these parts, works great, love it" or "I hear these part numbers work, but can't get em." Im trying to possibly find alternate part numbers or see if modifying available gears is a viable solution. I've spent a lot of time and money on my 1kz swap, and the highway rpms are the last obstacle I need to address.

Same idea here. Id open the other 150 to see what the gear looks like. Post some pics of the gear in question.

I am curious about the designation R151 that you refer to throughout this thread. I know that the R151F transmission was available in the US behind the 22RET from about 1986 - 1988. It was distinguished by its tail section, which bolted directly the RF1A transfercase., and by a lower 1st gear ratio. That's the last I heard of this transmission. You refer to an R151 in your '06. I thought all the R series transmissions were of the R150 type since 1988. What am I missing?

^^^ It is an r151 from Aussie land, I guess i didn't specify that in this thread. With that said, the r150 and r151 are the same transmission with the exceptions being different 1st gears, 5th gear and counter shaft, as well as input shaft length. I bought a 1KD-FTV and r151 package from Australia. So I am trying to figure out if I can take advantage of the 5th gear swap in the newer 06 trans, however, I am stuck at the moment until I pull the r150 and identify the different bits. From pulling my 06 r151 apart, it appears the Dyna 5th gear will not work, but I am hopeful I can Frankenstein the two transmissions together and create the 30% overdrive 5th I want for my diesel. At this point if I cannot do that, I may try to find an r150 from a Tacoma to use as the Frankenstein.

90% of the info/references I see to the r151 are about the late 80s 22rte transmission that mates to the gear driven T case. I received an r151 from a late 90s-early 00s prado with my 1kz diesel, and it shares the rear case pattern with my original r150 trans. It actually came with an awd, hi/low only T case with locking center diff that I swapped in favor of my original chain-driven case. Purely because I prefer the selectablility of my original case vs full-time 4wd.

In saying all of that, I'm thinking that the info most of us in the US have for the r151 may not be 100% applicable for our Japan/Aussie market transmissions. I have read via other forums that the later 151s may share the same cluster ratio with the 452s that are so hard to find. If that is the case, then the 5th and counter gear from an r151 should swap into a similar generation r150 to give the 30% OD. If that is incorrect, then swapping the gear sets nets you nothing, the ratios end up the same.

Aisin used variants of the R series transmissions in a lot of vehicles for quite some time. From the jeep ax15 to pontiac solstice ar5 to another found in the hummer H3.

Hi guys, just found this thread over google search so I registered to this forum maybe eventually we can help each other out. Also been trying to source the above said 5th counter gear but it seems like it's impossible to find any. Now I just contacted 3 chinese companies who manufacture oem replica transmission parts maybe they could source it. Will keep you updated if I get a reply.

Would you guys happen to know how to physically identify an R452 gearbox from the outside ? I'm trying to find a used donor box but keeping it as a last resort since the ones I've been quoted cost €750

So I've officially given up at sourcing part number 33046-25012 and tried researching other possible gear sets from other R-compatible boxes. Since we're looking at the early R-models, the years to look at must also match, and apparently Aisin used to also supply Jeep with their AX-15 at the time. After having a quick look at the gears it seems quite possible that they're interchangeable Has anyone ever mentioned this ? Through-out my entire research on changing to a higher ratio 5th I've never seen this box listed anywhere. The AX-15 5th gears count 47 teeth on the counter gear and 25 teeth on the main gear, this works out to .79 = 21% over drive. I know it's not the same as the Dyna's 30%, but at least it'll drop rpm by ~200 which is better then nothing, and both gears together cost less then USD100!

The gears on the left are from the AX-15 and the ones on the right are from the R452. They seem pretty alike to me

Hey mate, I didn't get the actual part numbers for the Jeep gears but I bought them off www.cobratransmission.com and everything fit as expected, apart from one modification that had to be done to the main gear. Basically the Jeep main gear has a plain part on both sides and the Toyota has one, so I took it to a machine shop were they wire-cut the excess off and ground it down to the exact dimension. Everything seems to be working fine on bench but I haven't put the box in my truck yet.

Thanks for the NEW information. I knew about the AX-15, but never crossed my mind to see if the 5th gear was the same, nice find. I am bout to remove my 94' R150, and tear the tailhousing off to see what i have going on.

EDIT....
https://www.amayama.com seems to have these in stock.

Doing a bit of research, I found this site...
https://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledg...ns/manual/ax15

Snip....
The Aisin-Warner AX15 transmission is a very successful, medium-duty, standard shift, five-speed transmission. It was introduced in the 1988 (mid-year) YJ Wrangler and XJ / MJ Cherokee / Comanche Jeeps, and found in 1988-1999 Jeep XJ, YJ, and TJ models. Its only year in the ZJ Grand Cherokee was 1993, and only with the six-cylinder.

The AX15 is found behind the AMC 258 and the Mopar 4.0L (242 ci) I6 engine. The AX15 is also found in Dakota trucks and is closely related to the Toyota R154 as found in the Supra Turbo, though the case rear halves and gear ratios vary. It is also related to (or referred to) as the AN5, AR5, MA5 in GM and Isuzu applications.

Cheers mate! That's awesome news! Those jeep transmissions would be extremely rare here in Australia but if i can buy them cheap online that doesn't really matter, basically it looks like they've just lathed down the gear on one side ? I'll look into the part numbers at home on my computer when I get the chance. I do have a mate with a blown ar5 transmission from a holden (gm) Colorado that might be good to steal parts off
