r12 to R134 conversion questions

Did my search, but was unable to find the answers I am looking for regarding the re-assembly of my A/C on an 87 Runner. I have pulled all plumbing (condenser, lines, compressor, drier) and have drained the oil from each. I plan on washing all lines out with acetone and then blowing compressed air to further dry before re-assembling. Here are my questions:

1. What can I use to safely wash the compressor (e.g. remove R12 oil)?

2. How much ester oil do I need to the compressor before re-assembly?

3. How much ester oil do I need to add to the drier?

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Aaron

I just shot my truck after it was low for 7 years? with a synthetic R134 that I bought from Walmart. 1lb. I vacuumed pumped it down for 2 hours. Freezing cold didn't add or change any oil. Nothing blew up yet. I would use 3oz for compressor. 1oz for dryer. Rule of thumb is 80% capacity of R134 in a R12 system. It won't be as cool when you are standing still, but it will be good at cruise.

Thanks for the details. I have been reading through the conversion threads and opinions vary greatly as to whether the R12 oil/refrigerant needs to be cleaned out thoroughly. Older threads say yes, but more recent posts indicate what you say...R12 to R134 is not so critical as once believed.

I was reading some backs of some cans of 134a today. The one made by "ez chill" or something similiar says that it IS compatible with r12 oil. Anyone have any experience with this? Not tring to hijack a thread, seems to be a logical question here.

Use ester oil. It's compatible with both R12 and 134A.

The ester oil at O'Reileys (spelling?) says NOT compatible with r12. Most internet research that I have done says that it is. I blame the Obama administration! Chaney/Bush had grude oil stock, I bet the present admin has 134 stock. Ok sorry for the venting... I am doing my other truck now, I plan to button everything back up (did not attempt to fully drain the r12 oil), a buddy is going to pressurize it for me with some nitrogen and uv dye, look for leaks, the fill my ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS worth of r12. If I can get another 18 years on the same r12 charge, it might just take me on my final ride someday. A worthless post, but it was well needed and you guys are the only ones that will listen.

Okay, but the bottle of ester oil that i bought stated that it was compatible (unless I'm slipping...old!!). I threw the bottle away after I was done so I can't go back and check!

I know that PAG is for R12 only (I think!)

I am a physics teacher, the first experiment that my class will do this year, in conjunction with the autotech class is to purchase the various types of oil, mix them with and without the presence of 134 and see what happends. Don't look for the results anytime soon as school has not started yet. But I will posts the results as soon as we have them. Another thought, the EZ CHILL 134 says that it is compatible "with r12 residue", but if you think about it, it does not say anything about being compatible with the oils used in r12 system. It is a conspiracy!!! What is r12 residue anyway?
Here is some good information. The clutch bearing in my 92 22re is an NSK 30BD5222DUM6, also has the number 134 on it seperately. If you can just repair the clutch, you don't have to break the system.
