Quieting the Tailgate Hinges

Is there any way that you guys have come up with to keep the tailgate hinges from rattling around? Everytime I go over a bump, even the slightest of bumps and they rattle like crazy. It's loud and annoying as hell, they sound like they're banging back and forth on the tailgate. I glanced at them real quick and didn't see any obvious way of tightening them or anything like that...When the tailgate is down, they're not lose or anything...I can't be the only one with this annoying problem..

Interesting, maybe its the fact that it's 2am, but I'm trying to picture how that would be effective. That would have to be some big heat shrink to cover the hinges.

if you wanted to cheap out i bet you could
unbolt them cut up an old bike tube an slide it over
them, the rubber would cut the sound down i would think.
idk, something i just thought right now.

i wrapped mine in the foam you put on conduit and stuff.
it falls off now and then, but its worth not hearing that
crazy rattle

Yep, I picked up a set of those to replace the broken broken remnants of the stock ones and no more noise since then. And they are more than washers, they have little springy tabs on them them wedge the two pieces of metal tight so they can't rattle. Prior to that, I had a little luck with brushing on several coats of the poly tool grip paint to build up a thickness of the soft material.

Yes, went to a Toyota parts counter with teh VIN off my 4Runner and asked for a pair of anti-rattle clips for the tailgate supports. Did not save the p/n as that was about 8 years ago.

I feel your pain. I guess this is a common problem, I just bought a set of those plastic clips myself. I think they were about $4.00 for the pair. Probably the best $4.00 I've spent on my truck. I hated those angled speed bumps the most. All 4 tires go over the bump at different times...and the hinges are rattling the whole time.

That is the torsion bar that makes it easier to raise and lower the tailgate. Add a little grease to the moving parts to silence them.

The name didn't make sense to me either at first. Hinge stopper or something like that. The clips are mounted to the bed...so when you look at the diagram you should be able to figure it out. Also, when I got mine the part # was for a pair of them. That might help to find the right part as well. I just threw away all my little Toyota baggies with the part #'s on them.

Ok, just went to the garage and looked through my pile of receipts. According to this they were $4.88 each, so make sure you are getting 2. It's called a stopper and the part# on my invoice is 65778-89105.
