Question On Using A Compression Tester
When I test my 3vze it takes a about three compression strokes of the cylinder being tested to get up to a good reading. That's while turning over at a good cranking speed. Is that normal? -- Matt

Ya I usually let it go about 4 honestly!! Maybe it's wrong but unless your looking for tiny problems I say go a couple over cause it's going to hold the highest pressure it hits and as long as you stay consistent with all cylindars should be fine!!!! Right????? Or have I been doing this wrong the whole time?

Be sure to hold the throttle all the way open while cranking. Yes, it will need multiple compression strokes to reach max pressure. I usually do 6-8, but no more than 8, and just be sure you read each cyl on the same number of pops. It's important to disconnect the stuff the fsm says to so the injectors don't fire.

When all the plugs are out the motor sounds different turning over. Recently I gave mine 6 "whatever" noises on each cylinder as it cranked (maybe 3-4 seconds each).
As sb5 said, hold the throttle open. With EFI, you can disable the fuel pump or injectors (?) so gas isn't being shot in, which is the reason for not cranking longer than necessary when carbed. Pouring in lots of unburned gas isn't good for the cat.

hold WOT and just crank it over for a few seconds. As already stated make sure atleast the coil is disconnected from the distributor (just pull the plug wire out) you dont have to go through the trouble of disconnecting or dodads, you wont flood the motor enough to worry about (not that id worry about a flooded condition anyways!)
I'm not sure what the 3vze should be at but 175-180 on a 22r(e)(t) is a great place to be =) .. I think min is 145? but if your at 145 somethings on it's last legs (valves? rings? etc)

I'm happy to report that with three tested (the passenger side cylinders) and three to go (the driver's side) I've got readings of 170 to 180.
