Question regarding the center diff.
Hey guys,
I've said this already, but it bear repeating: I'm new to Toyota and to trucks.
I've been reading some of the threads on diff lockers, and have noticed that a lot of people get a front diff and a rear diff locker, but I haven't read anything about people getting a center diff locker. Why is that?

Because there is no "center" differential. The transfer cases in Toyota trucks do not have differental output to the front and back like some other cases (early chev NP203,s did). Therefor when you are in 4x4 you are driving the front and back at the same rate (equal torque front and back). This is the best you can have. Most vehicles with the AWD (all wheel drive designation) usually have a center diff. This way they can use clutch packs and stuff to modulate torque to the front/back as needed or just leave open like the case of the Chev 203.

Awesome, thanks Flash. I'm used to working with Audis (AWD), so this transfer case business is new to me. So the front and rear are locked together via the TC? What if the front 2 tires are off the ground, you're saying the fronts and rears will still be driven equally?
If so, then with front and rear lockers, these trucks would be unstoppable...

Some Toyota's do have a center differential, such as my 2002 4Runner V6 Auto. It is really nice, because I can select 4x4 on any road condition... even dry pavement (which you don't need anyways, but on snowy days, it's nice to not have to worry about selecting it in and out of 4x4, depending if you're on a snowy section or not), and if the situation requires it, I just lock the center differential (and eventually I will hopefully have dual... or at least a rear ARB locker that I can lock up as well).

That, and they are narrow enough to take on jeep trails the ford and chevy guys wish they could.
