Pulling 22R block with head off?

Just curious if any one has ever pulled a short block out of a pickup. With the head off where would a person attach the lifting chain?
would attaching the chain to some old head bolts work or would it damage the threads in the block?

When you hoist an engine out with head attached you are essentially lifting the block up by the head bolts so you could use the head bolt holes but I wouldn't if you don't have to. The block doesn't weigh much so the head bolt threads could handle it for sure, but I would be more worried about jacking up the head gasket mating surface. I'd recommend using two of the tranny bolt holes in the rear and couple of the timing cover holes in the front. I like to use at least 3 mounting points when hoisting so the engine doesn't hit the floor in the event that one fails.

I run a chain from one of the transmission bolts to an AC bracket bolts diagonally from front to rear.

Haha well Toyota never intended anyone to remove the engine with the head missing but I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat. I would also not recommend using head bolt holes for lifting.

Recommend re-install cylinder head and remove engine.

Thanks for the replies guys...

Wyoming9 - do you have a picture of the plate you could share? And are you using special bolts, shorter bolts?

Thx.

for the record, i think that the bare 22re block is 60lbs... it was worth ~$5.50 when i took it in to be recycled.
