Problem: Cranks, won't start.

Truck: '92 pickup w/ 22re

Problem: Thursday I went to a friends house and parked in his yard, shut off my truck as usual. We left in his truck and upon my return to go home, I get in my truck and it won't start. It cranks, or should I say spins - but doesn't start, doesn't even burp.

I can't see it having jumped time or anything, I have not done a compression test for lack of a gauge.

Things I've done are..

Tried starter fluid in the intake

Checked the plugs, got spark and the plugs look fine.

I've checked the air sensor, manual says it should read between 200 and 400 Ohms, it reads 300.

Checked the fuel, got pressure and the fuel filter flows fine.

Reset the computer.

Checked all connections, vacuum lines, etc. nothing amiss.

I'm probably forgetting something. It's been a stressful couple days.

So I googled around, couldn't find much of anything I hadn't already done or isn't applicable to my truck.

Any ideas fellas?

pull codes? i'm sure its got one. you may have the same or possible clsoe issue i have.... right now my truck has fuel spark and everthing and won't start. i pulled the code and it gave me a code for rpm signal/igniton signal. I plan to trouble shoot it in a few days but i am prolly in need of a pick-up coil which is in the distributor. you can trying cleaning the inside of your distributor components and or beat on ur ignitor and see if that helps.

You reminded me of some things.

I've tried both a different coil, and igniter. Neither did anything.

I don't have a code reader, do any of the auto parts stores still lend those things out?

Blah brain cramp theres 2 terminals you jump in the diagnostic plug to get the engine light to blink you the code....... "Someone help me out yota tech!" Yea you might can look that up online i forget but if you get the code out let us know or look it up and tell us..... alot of parts stores do have code readers but i don't think they do for OBDI vehciles like ours....... you know how to read the engine code light blinks right? You need a piece of wires or paper clip to jump. The light will blink a certain number times to give you a number. It pauses 1 secs between each number and about 3 secs between each code.

I'll try that tomorrow and post what I find.

Appreciate it!

No, you want the engine off, it won't throw codes while it's running, just give you a solid CEL (if you get a CEL). You want the engine off and the key in the IGN position. If you're getting codes when your truck isn't running you should probably look into them. Your lack of codes while idling does not mean everything is ok.

I tried the Fp to B+ terminal jump, couldn't seem to find which other ones to try. No dice. Should I try the TE1 and E1? Wasn't sure if those were it or not.

Is this timing related? But if so, how, considering how I came upon this issue..

It's not giving me anything so I figure I'm doing it wrong. What's the trick, if there is one?

When you jump those terminals with the key on your engine light should blink. It will blink a certain number times to show a code let us know the number blinks if any. It will pause about 1 sec between numbers if its a 2 digit code and pause 2-3 secs between codes.

I'm using a piece of copper wire inside the terminal slots, but I'm not sure if it's making the connection. Engine light shows up, but doesn't blink.

Okay, yup. Wasn't making the connection.

It blinks 3 times quickly, pause, then once.. Code 31?

http://4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/AFM/index.shtml I was looking there.

Jumping those terminals isn't getting her going, unless I again failed to make a good connection. And/or my battery is weak after the past couple days.

Did u get a NEW vafm, or a used one? If its new, and u still have the issue (code 31), then u likely have a bad wire somewhere or bad ecu... its unlikely the ecu... but it is possible.
