Post Recall 1995 4Runners - HG problem fixed?
Hello,
Thanks to Buckz, I have figured out that the 95 I want to get was manufactured after Toyota 'fixed' the HG problem in the 95's and hence is not subject to the recall. My question I'm hoping someone can help me out with is was the fix a good one - ie, was the problem solved? Should I plan on spending $ on a HG problem in the future if I buy this truck? Any advice is much appreciated. Oh, it is subject to some sort of steering column recall, anyone know what that was about?

I've had 3 4Runners with the 3.0 and they were all problematic. I had a 91, 92 and then a 95. The previous models had head gaskets replaced under warranty but the 95 was not covered. I bought the 95 with 146k miles and had to replace the head gaskets at 166k miles. From my experience all 3.0's are prone to head gasket failure and will most likely blow at some point. That is why I drive a 22RE now.
the steering rod relay recall is a good thing because toyota will replace all tie rod ends and the steering rod for free if they haven't already.
The 3.0 is a decent motor if maintained properly and what I mean by that is: head gaskets replaced if high miles, timing belt and water pump at the regular intervals, these are questions you need to be asking if you are on the market for a 4Runner with the 3.0.
good luck

my '95 didn't "qualify", but i had to have the HG done in '03 at roughly 90k. mine was weeping coolant into the cylinders. according to the service writer, HG's just wear out. so no, i don't think they are immune.
i too used the steering recall to replace my tie-rod ends that were rusty and seized.
