so customer "Chad" brought this to me late last week .. he's from Calgary .

I didnt get a shot of the truck with the bed on .. but believe you me , it was bad .

I got the box off .




and started to clean up the frame ..

second day , I got on cleaning again .. inside and out
I used a small air chistle , and wire brush .. and "chipped" off all the rust ..
worked very well ..



as the truck sat overnight , ran into a small problem .. as usual , the brake lines were rusted , and just needed that little "hose action" to reviel a pin hole .. you can see it soaked the frame ..





so in order to fix this .. I had to remove the fuel tank ..
and of course with that .. the fuel line breaks .. as well as almost every bolt !!





so now with the fuel tank removed .. you can clearly see the problem ..





new parts ordered ..

couple of more things ..
I'm replacing the shackles , as they were siezed solid , and removal was difficult .



repaired the spare winch .. now it works !!



and also .. continued on cleaning the internal frame rails .. 2ND cleaning pile ..

Wow, good old alberta rust! Looks like quite the task...

So how do you clean the inside of the frame rails?

lots of patience ..

basically there is no sure way .. but what I do .. is soak it thuroughly .. many times , and try to loosen up the chunks .. bang on it many times with a hammer , air blasting .. , and then again with the power washing .. I do this 3-4 times .. or maybe even more .. it all depends on when I think it's clean enough !!

wow, that rust is BAD! the only way to kill a toyota is to drive it in alberta winters for a dozen years

Hey, I saw this thread. I am in the middle of a similar frame problem (maybe a little worse for mine) on a 92. I am sleeving the weakened area with 1/4 in steel flat bar, and replacing the OEM springs with chevy 63's. that will move the spring eyes to a more solid section of frame, and give a better ride too.

no weak areas on this frame ... it's all good , just surface rust .

ok .. so a little more today ..
I ordered a new fuel pump bracket , and even a diff vent

continued working on getting the inside clean .. I "reduced" the vaccuum hose , so I could vac up the some of the pieces that just didnt want to come out ..



I was able to pull some of the larger chunks out .. and then "suck" up the smaller debris .


and one more air blast , and wash , and it'll be good to go ...

also ..

finished the repair on the brake line ..



and also got the new shackles and bushings on .. LOTS of neversieze , and ..WOW the suspension actually works like it should now ..




and also had to drill and tap some broken bolts .. did them on the frame , and also the fuel filler tube ..



all washed and cleaned up .. I started the POR-15 treatment








truck is now sitting in the shop over the weekend to "dry out" from the last clean and wash .. so MONDAY .. I'll be doing the frame .

I work winters in "the patch" and i thought no salt was used on the roads,, why so much rust?? Must be an out of province rig

you thought wrong ... salt is used . -40* weather requires salt on the road ways .......

hah! you should see what ontario salt does to a vehicle! has to be a better way that is more eco friendly and cost effective.

nice work on that frame, going to look pretty good when youre all done. keep those pix coming.

yes ontario will kill a truck if you dont crown oil spray or atleast wash your truck every week in the winter to get the salt off... im gonna battle rust before it starts on my new surf........some places use sand if it doesnt get too cold

PEI is one of the worst places for rust, there's always salt in the air (being an Island Does that) plus all the salt used on the roads. it's pretty bad...

-40 requires sand. Salt doesn't work past -15 or so.

My truck's in about the same condition as that first post.

actually they use a "slurey" these days .. it's a liquid additive to the salt , like an antifreeze ..so they can use it in "the real harsh weather"

Potassium acetate is better and less corrosive to the road and to metal. Probably not a cheap as rock salt though. Michigan Dot uses a little, but mostly used on airport runways (pot holes are real dangerous on runways!)
