Popping out of 4 low

Memorial day weekend my friends and I were doing a little trail riding and everytime I would be going down a hill in 4low actually using the motor to keep me going slow it would pop out of gear into neutral on the transfer case.
I am not sure what is going on??? Is there a linkage or something I should check...

BTW it is an 86 4runner 4cylinder

Any info would be appreciated

thanks

if you have a body lift it will make that happen. Had the same problem. Removed the trim around the shifters and problem stopped. If that doesnt work try trimming around the metal so that the shifter does not rest on anything. The slightest body flex will make it throw back out. This was my experience.

Bumping

I have an 89 manual 4runner 22RE with the same problem of the t-case popping out of 4 low. I was driving uphill and it kept popping out back into t-case neutral. Transmission stayed in gear though. No body lift so i don't think i have the t-case full-engagement problem. 4 high works fine afaik. Any other ideas on this guys? Rebuild t-case gears?

Yeah, the engine mounts are good. I actually DO have a body lift, DUH. I didn't put it in but I also didn't look close enough at it. Should I trim the body, the plastic trim, or both? Any good pics of how much someone has trimmed off?

Bumping this up to see if anyone knows if there is an another shift lever you can get for the transfer case that will fit with a 2" body lift. I trimmed a cut-out for the 4-low position but the knob just sits really low in the truck. It's annoying to shift into 4 low and i'm also worried about the lever's inability to sway with the transfer case because it's jammed up so tight. Does anyone sell a longer transfer case shift lever, or one with the proper angle to deal with a 2" body lift? Does anyone know if a transmission lever will fit the transfer?

remove the shifter, put it in a vice, heat it and bend it just below where it would hit the metal plate and rubber boots. problem solved, doesn't cost anything.

You done that before? I'm all for free solutions so I might give that a try. I'd like to have it higher though so it's closer to the stock height.

if you can weld, you can cut and reweld the stick with an extension in it. trail gear or marlin crawler might make a bolt on extension. can't remember i know i have seen them

Yeah, i can't weld. It's 4Crawler that has the extensions, thanks for the reminder... http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/...hifteExtension

the other bonus to heating it and bending it, it moves it away from the stick for the trans, not sure about your truck but i know when i put my truck into reverse it hits the t case shifter.

I don't get any of that happening. Aside from the body lift the tranny, transfer, and their levers are stock so Toyota didn't muck it up so they hit each other in any position. It's all body lift related. I think I'll bend it and put on the 2" extension from 4crawler.

What sucks is I needed it for a trip this past weekend so I cut up the boot and the plate just to have it ready to go last minute. Now i'll do this proper fix and try to find a new boot and plate.

Put it in a vice and beat the heck out of it. The stock shifter on my crawler unit wanted to occupy the same space as the 5 speed shifter when it was engaged, bent it a little and everything plays nice together now. I think either All Pro or Marlin sells a heavier detent spring for the transfer case.
