Picked up a ticking, guzzling, no EGRing truck

I just got my second Yota truck. The first was an 86. She's gone now. Now I'm buying a '94 with a 3.0 from a friend. He blew the head gasket on the driver's side about a year ago. He had a shop fix it. They decked the driver's side head and replaced both head gaskets. Now the CEL is on and the gas mileage sucks. It's throwing a 71. I've read a few people say they had bad modulating valves after blowing head gaskets, and I think mine is bad. It's getting vacuum, but that vacuum isn't getting to the EGR valve. The EGR valve passes the ol' suck & stall test. I'm not so sure the EGR accounts for the abysmal gas mileage. It's lifted with 33" tires, but I drive it gently, 55 MPH, 30 minute commute with only 2 stops. I think I'm only getting like 10 MPG. I'd expect to see at least 15 MPG under the gently conditions I drive, even with the tires. Should I check timing?

Is it manual or auto?

Well part of your gas mileage is prolly due to the 33's. Wat gears are in the rear? You might need to upgrade in order to compensate for them. If you do a search it'll list a lot of info on it.

How's the idle?

Could be many things. I'd start with the EGR and fix that, then go from there.

Says in the sig...it's a 5 speed. PO says he noticed a drop in mileage. I may regear, but I'm leaning toward going to a smaller tire.

well if you look hard enough (junkyards n such) you might find a set of 4.88 thirds, just a bolt on and thats about stock gearing for 33's and a 5spd, their found in 3.0 auto's with stock 31" tires theres a way to tell from the vin, thats around here somewhere....
