Oily Advice

hi,

i'm wanting to replace my transmission, transfer case, and differential oils.

the manual specifies:

Transmission Oil (3.2qt) & Transfer (1.7qt)
API GL-4 or GL-5
SAE 75W-90

Diff Fluid (1.7qt Front, 2.0qt Rear)
Hypoid Gear Oil
API GL-5
SAE 80W or 80W-90

since i'm in an extreme cold climate i want to use synthetic all around. i've read a number of posts and other internet garb and, of course, am still confused by the seldom agreeing advice.

in the past i've just had the local jiffy lube do the job, but $$$ is tight this summer so i'd prefer to do it myself.

the diff fluid seems pretty straightforward, something like a mobile1 synthetic.

but the trans oil is where most of the confusion lies. does anyone have a good suggestion on what to use for the transmission and transfer case?

thanks so much.

crack open the filler hole on all parts BEFORE opening the drain hole to make sure you can fill it back up.

and the redline oil is good stuff.

I've been using MT-90 in the trans and transfer and M1 75W-90 in the diffs for many years; 275K on the trans/transfer! Remember: Gl-5 for the diffs, GL-4 for the trans.
The M1 75W-90 will work OK in the trans based on my experience...I had it in the trans for 10,000 miles or so some years ago.

Red face

Given a choice one should always go with the higher ratings in gear oil specs as well as engine oils.

as I was told by one of local oil vendors .

What does every one else use and what can be bought local.
