oil pump drive gear broke in half??

So I have been doing a headgasket swap among other things on my new 90 4runner 22re, and in pulling off the oil pump today, I found that the inside drive gear was broken in half. (See Pics) the thin ring is what broke off. The all drive teeth were still in tact. Dont get me wrong I am not going to reuse the pump, but what could cause something like that. Anyone ever seen something like this before?

Thanks

Plastic Guides

A part of my project on this truck is to put in both steel guides. The drivers side plastic guide was pretty hooped by the time I got to it. Could be the plastic, but could that really cause it to snap in half like that?
