Oil Pan Bolts and PS Pump drivin me crazy!

Alright so two things. First I dunno what the deal is with my oil pan bolts, but they wont stay torqued down! I've tightened the helll outta em 2 times in the past week. Thinking about using some red locktight on em. What yall think?

Secondly, my powersteering pump (trailgear's rock assault kit. 84 didn't have ps to begin with. tg style pump) is squealing, and it's about to drive me up the wall. Using synth powersteering fluid. Haven't really bled it (dunno how you're supposed to bleed em), and when I turn off the truck and open the reseviour you can see bubbles. Saw someone say something about using ATF in the pump, but I dunno about all that. Is there a way to bleed these pumps?

Toyota power steering setups are designed to use ATF not power steering fluid. If you have driven it for a while now the system is bled, however if you didn't bleed the system first you could have caused permanent damage which will make it squeal forever. To put bleed the system you put the front end on jackstands and turn the wheel back & forth slowly let it sit and check the fluid. You can ussually then let it run for 30 secs and check it again. Once you see no more bubbles in the fluid it is bled.

From what I understand about the trailgear pump kit, is that the pump is a "tc" style pump, is more like a chevy's pump than a toyota's pump.

Plus trailgear told me to run synth ps fluid in it, so I assume they know their own products.

But yeah I've had it up on a rack and ran it from lock to lock about 10 times. And I've driven it about 500 miles since I've put powersteering on this truck so.... I dunno.

High output pumps will make more noise most of the time. I don't know enough obout trail-gears product. I have a PSC pump and gets loud, I have just learned to live with it. I want to try royal purple in it I have heard that it helps.

Your seals will start to go.

I put power steering fluid in my old pump, it got to the point that when I was stopped i wouldnt have ANY power steering. It would literally drip off my truck! Then one day the pulley just walked itself out and met mr fan!

Could the belt be dirty (oil) or need adjustment?

since no one else wants to say it, I will:
blue locktite should work fine on the oil pan bolts.
red is a little harder to remove if/when you need to.

The booty fab to get the fan belt on might be the problem as my TG pump didn't make a sound, but if you have bubbles in the reservoir you still have air in the system and turning the tires lock to lock 10 times ain't gonna cut it.

Put the front axle up on jackstands, crank it, cycle the steering 20 times back and forth, check for bubbles, refill as necessary, let it sit for 30 minutes or so (until the bubbles dissipate) repeat until no bubbles.

Blue Loctite on the oil pan bolts and/or the above suggestion.

I do believe the pump kit instructions detail how to bleed the ps pump system.

FYI: On the Toyota PS pump reservoir it has a sticker that very plainly reads that only ATF is used in PS pump systems, not to mention it is clearly stated in the owners manual as well (at least on every 22RE I've seen).

do you have a cork gasket for the oil pan? they tend to compress alot (and are worthless IMO) and that'll make the oil pan bolts seems loose. The best thing for the oil pan, and it'll never leak, is black RTV - always used it and never had a problem, just don't use the entire tube and make sure everything is clean and dry before putting the oil pan up

TC style pumps, as opposed to Toyota pumps, require Royal Purple PS fluid. Do NOT use anything else, in particular Valvoline Synpower PS fluid, which is unfortunately junk - as tested by PSC themselves and relayed to me.

And I am a Valvoline guy. Don't ask me how I found it out myself...

Ditto on Toyota black FIPG. Don't use orange; black is for motor, orange is for diffs and tranny.

You should not have to contiually tighten the pan bolts. If you do, you have one of two problems:

1. Cheap cork gasket (you get what you paid for)

2. Non-factory bolts that dont have the washers on them.

the first design oil pans (79-84) had raised ridges, instead of recessed ridges like the 85-95 pans. If you really want to fix it permanently, replace your oil pan with the 85+ design (recessed ridges) and use FIPG (NOT that blue RTV goop, that crap is junk)
