odd issue on freeway, just died for a second...
cruising along at 70 and its like it shut off for about 1 second, check engine light flashed, then it took off again like nothing happened, it was so fast. Anyone ever had this? Never done it before or since, it runs great.

bets on code 14!!!!! my 22re i moved one ground from a black bolt to a gold one and inspected/heavily re-wraped the wiring harness.
go through a puddle or a car-wash and i bet it dies.
this problem plagued me for litterally years. intermittent for a the first year or so then steadily got to wear the truck was completely not driveable

Again, look for codes...if the check engine light flashed when it happened, that code should be stored in the ECU.
Anyone can guess what happened, but your truck most likely knows what happened.
If you don't know how to pull codes, read:

It's not that uncommon an issue, it even happens with some 22R-Es. My 88 3VZ-E does it, and code 11 is everpresent. It could be caused by a faulty relay(COR or EFI main), a failing VSS, a short in any of the wiring supplying power to the ECU, any combination of such things, or for reasons unknown. And there may or may not be any codes present as a result.
Other than replacing the VSS and/or the COR and/or the EFI main relay on mine, I still can't figure out what's the deal with it. All of which "appear" to be in good working condition after thoroughly inspecting them so...
Here's some reading material on the subject:

im dead serious about the wiring harness. i dont think the ground had much to do with it. check codes first. like i said my money is on code 14. if its that, i may be able to help, because i learned wayyyy too much information about the igf signal in my tribulations.

Same problems here. Been plaguing me for a while. Engine light flashes, dies, then recovers. No codes. One of these days, I'll get it figured out. If I could get my hands on a cluster, maybe that might help.

VSS 1, from MudHippy's first article. FWIW, I've replaced almost every ignition component, to no avail. From my reading, it's either the Circuit opening relay, a bad ground, or maybe the ignitor (haven't replaced).
