normal auto slugg or did i do something wrong
So i finished swapping in the new tranny in to my 89.... bolted it in, filled it with fluid, fired it up, let it run for a several seconds (minute max) to get fluid moved around, turned it off, topped it off....
now reverse catches and goes when you hit the gas. however, when you put it in drive it doesnt seem like it can get out of its own way.... i have to stomp on it to get it moving and its a DOG.... i only drove it around the shop complex (25mph) but it takes forever to get rollin. it doesnt feel like anything slipping (although i have only ever driven manuals so i only know what a slipping clutch feels like)
is it just normal 3.0+auto + 4.10s? or did do something wrong? i know these are underpowered and i have 5.29s i need to swap in the front and then buy a 5.29 open rear but this seems real bad...
btw i've decided i hate working on autos... give me a 5sp anyday...

Well, there's a A340H, and a A340F. I have the A340H in my '91. Lemme check my FSM's for you, but I wanna say problems with your TC off the top of my head......
but I'm no tranny guy.....

Ok, the A340H and A340F were both mated to the 3.0 and used in our 4x4's. This is out of the troubleshooting section of my FSM:
Vehicle does not/barely moves in any forward range or reverse:
1) Manual linkage out of adjustment
2)Valve body or primary regulator faulty
3)Parking lock powl faulty
4)Torque converter faulty
5)Converter plate broken
6)Oil pump intake screen blocked
7)Transmission faulty

Did you fill the torque converter with fluid before installing it?
I don't know a thing about toyota autos. I work on corvettes also and it sounds real similar to the problems people have when they forget to fill the converters on the T350 and T400 transmissions.

Hum, we were taught to check it in Drive in auto shop many years ago. But I'm no auto tranny expert.

so you say you have to stomp on it to get it to move...
does the engine rev up high and the truck not move, like a slipping clutch, or does the engine rpms stay low and it's like the parking brake is dragging?
torque converter new also? did you add about 2 qts atf to the torque converter, right?
all told, with tc and trans both dry, takes a little over 10 qts fluid to fill the a340 series trans, about 6-7 qts for a44d.

You don't have to fill the TC first before stabbing it into the tranny.
Since reverse works, it's unlikely to be the TC..
My bet is stuck solenoid(s) and or valve(s) in the VB.
You do have it filled completely, right ?

i put another qt in tongiht and it seems to being doing better. revers and Low catch.. 2nd and drive still are slow. also the transfer case doesnt not apepar to be working 4low doesnt have any gear reduction.
when i stand on it, it feels like there ebrake is set... revs stay low and it just drags. does NOT feel like slipping clutch.
i didnt not put 2qts in there was some oil in it and i was told that it would fill up once its installed from the tranny.

If the donor had any miles at all to speak of, you should use a new/rebuilt TC.
