No spark after setting couple weeks
I bought this truck and it has been sitting or over 6 years due to no spark. I got the truck and the previous owner had torn the dash out looking for a short. I put the truck back together including the distributer that was in pieces. I started ohm checking things and couldnt find a problem. i used a spark tester and wasnt getting any spark out of distributer. I then took my ohm meter and was ohm checking the two wires coming from the ignitior to the distributer. I happen to turn the key on while doing this with my meter hooked up and the distributor started firing with out the truck running. so i tried to start and it started. i shut the truck off hooked the connector back together and the truck fired up and ran fine for setting for over 6 years. I let it set for a couple weeks till i could get to it again and when i went to start it there again no spark. I did the same thing with ohm meter and got spark. So I am wondering if anyone knows what this could be. I am thinking maybe the pickup coil in distributor. I have checked the air gap and i have it set right. any help would be awesome.....dont want to throw parts at it cause they are not cheap for distributor or ignitior. the previous owner says he put a differant ignitior but it looks like a factory one....
my toy...has detroit lockers front and rear, 4.56 gears, and suspension lift and body lift....runs good for over 170,00 miles on motor....

The 22r igniter (if it's working) creates spark if it has power, a good ground (through the mount bolts), a good Ne signal from the distributor's signal coil, a good ignition coil, and good connections between those components.
I'm assuming since you had your ohmmeter on the signal coil leads that you tested its resistance per fsm spec, but if not, get the spec from an fsm for any 22r of the same era.
Check for power on the pos lead of the coil when ignition is on, and make sure power also gets to the igniter (should be same color wire as to the pos coil term - prob black w/red stripe).
Clean up the igniter ground through it's mounting bolts, check the resistance on both circuits of the coil, and clean up all the connections between distrib, igniter and coil. It is possible that the signal coil or the ignition coil can test out okay resistance-wise but still fail to work right. That's more common with the ignition coil. But if the signal and ignition coils are okay, and the power, grounds & connections check out, then probably it's a bad igniter.

talked to the owner and he said that he put a new coil on the truck. I did find an older one in the back seat area of the truck. There is power to the hot wire side of the coil and ignitior....What is the resistence of the pickup coil. I tried ohm checking it and there was nothing...Thats what me think that it was the pickup coil cause putting the ohm meter in place of the pickup coil made it fire.....I will try to find and download the fsm for this truck. I think 87 was the cut off year to when they put efi in these trucks but i think that was in the late year builds..this is a early year build...

well just read the fsm for the truck......it showed to ohm test the two wires coming out of the distributer and I should get 140 to 180 ohm's...I dont get anything....So I am thinking the pickup coil or generator is bad. I can get that part and replace it for under 40 bucks....thanks for the help.....might see if i can find a whole used distributor from al my yota buddies.....
