No Reverse 91 PU 3.slow Automatic
I went wheeling this weekend, and while I was on the trail, my reverse quit working. (Had to get pulled out!). I searched the threads, and all I could find were threads on a manual transmission. My truck is a 91 Pickup 3.0 with an automatic trans. All of the other gears seem to work fine, and engage properly. When I shift in reverse, its just like being in neutral, the truck just revs. I was on a pretty rough trail w/ manzanita bushes everywhere, and I think some got under my truck. I'm thinking it might be the the linkage for the shift lever position? Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave

Shifts into Park just fine. I just bought the truck a couple months ago, and am just familiarizing myself. I don't see anything unusual, but not sure what unusual might look like! Guess I'm just hoping I won't have to rebuild tranny.

I guess if it will shift into park it would also shift into reverse since reverse is between drive and park. Probably not the linkage in that case, unless its just not stopping in the right spot for reverse. Does the little red indicator show its in reverse, you know that little spot of color right by the letters P-R-N-D-2-1?

I did figure it out...I burned out the reverse power band. The bummer about these transmissions is that they are a pain to rebuild and very expensive to replace new. I opted to do a 5 speed swap and am accumulating all of the parts necessary to do so. The other option was just to pick up a used transmission for as cheap as possible. The A340H is integrated with the transfer case, which doesn't give you the option adding a crawl box, or basically do anything else to it. So for me, I am done messing with it! Going with an R150F and a gear driven t-case. So far I'm into it about 1200.00 and I have all of the major components, including a freshly built transmission. The cheapest rebuild at a shop I could find was 1900.00.

Wow. I stand corrected! Pretty cool. All of the research I read said that you can only adapt to a A340F. Even so, I wouldn't mess with this transmission anymore! I like the simplicity of the manual.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave! I was afraid of that, and whats worse is that I had that transmission rebuilt just 3 years ago! I'm also going to start looking into converting to a manual and gear T-case.

Sorry to hear that about your tranny Jim. 3 yrs ago? Wow, that sucks. Good luck on the swap, I should be knee deep in mine within the next couple weeks. If you search the threads around here you'll find some killer info, not to mention guys like Mt Goat that'll correct you when you need it and help you out when you need it!

Same problem
I'm having the exact same issue with my 91' 22RE automatic RWD.
Drives fine going forward, but sometimes it's hard to get into reverse; last night I couldn't get it to go into reverse at all.
Really hoping I don't have to put a new tranny in, but sounds like I'm going to😑
Thanks for all the info everybody!
And good luck with your trucks🤙
