Well this is my first post on here, im new to toyota's but not to wrenching. I've always been more of a full size diesel truck guy. Always liked the little toyota's for their milage and offroad abilty and came across a deal i couldnt pass up. I bought a 87 pickup off a buddy with a locked up motor. originaly a efi truck but i found a good deal on a rebuilt pre-85 22r. Got it in and running good but have no heat. i have the inlet to the heater core coming from the driver side timing cover/water pump and return from the hardline that bolts to the bottom of the intake manifold under the egr port, that goes around the back of the motor and sits right next to the other. I thought forsure those were right for the heater lines but i get no heat from it. i have backflushed the heater core and the hoses both get hot going into the cab. my thinking is they are both pressure sides and im not getting flow through the core. i just need to know what to use for pressure and return so i can get some heat. this is going to be my winter truck and its gettin cold fast. sorry for the long post, ill be more to the point on my future threads. thanks

And don't apologize for a long post, I'd rather read a few extra words instead of. "my truck won't blow hot air, whats wrong" The more info you include the better. Welcome to toyotas!

P.s. Since you know cummins, get your hands on a 4bt and stuff it in a toyota. I've always thought it would be a great combo.

Here's what happened to me, did basically the same thing put the motor in and no heat. Found out the guy didn't have a thermostat in it. My bad for not checking.

come to think of it i never did check for a t-stat, just assumed there was one in there because i all the lines get good and hot. I will check that asap.

nothingbetter - I've searched and searched and somehow cant find anything definitive about what i need for heat. I know its such a stupid little thing but its driving me nuts lol. And on the 4bt, that was my first thought when i got the truck. My buddy is building a jeep on 40s with one and i know another guy that has a complete 4bt wanting to trade for a 6bt, which i have sitting on a stand in the garage lol. but i just wanted the thing running for now so i could play

well i checked and there was no thermostat so i threw one in. coolant seems to get a little hotter but still no heat in the cab. both lines going in get really warm but it dosent produce any heat. im pretty sure both lines are pressurized and just fighting each other so im not getting flow. i was also wondering if maybe something on the hvac box itself is wrong, but i should get heat on any setting right? as long as the valve going into the heater core is open?

I was just browsing for some diagrams of the 22re heater system.. I found this.. Maybe it helps to see where your hoses are going to and coming from..

Also, just a thought off the top of my head.. you most likely have checked this already.. I was surprised to find some coolant lines running to the bottom of my 4runner, I followed them and found they go into a little heater core for the backseat heater (I didn't know I had one.. new car.. ) anyway, i tried to wash it out from the hood, and found that the garden hose pressure (30-60 psi) barely gave it a trickle. Long story short, I ended up cutting the pipes (feeder and return) out and will replace them. The core was fine. So, check the flow in both directions from the ends of the hoses in the hood. It could be one of the lines that is restricting flow...?

But I think your earlier flushing of the system took care of this anyway.

there is a little cable that opens and closes the valve for the heater hoses. If there isn't a cable hooked up there or not moving just reach under it and manually move it. You will have heat then. the valve is top center on the pic above. It's held by that little bracket attached to the firewall.

i'm thinking that even if the hoses are reversed, you still have flow through the heater core when the valve is open.

i have the same problem, both hoses hot, hooked up correctly, heater core flows water when flushed, but very little heat in the cab.

looks like i'm going to have to open up the dash :-/

thanks for the pictures guys, thats why im so frustrated...mine is plumbed identical to those. The valve is also hooked up and i have manually opened it by hand. After a good 15-20 minute drive rippin around gravel roads still no heat. what could be wrong under the dash? my vent/recirculate lever dosent seem to do anything, i took the dash off once and the defrost/heat/mix/ect wasnt hooked up so i manually moved the cable to where heat would be and still nothing

does that hard line that comes around the rear of the motor go up to the pass. side water pump/timing case or to about the center of the intake manifold right under the egr?

^--Pipe your referring too, goes to the heater control valve that is attached to the intake side of the cyldiner head.
