No 5th gear

Iam lookin at a 1988 Toyota 4x4 5-speed and i guess the 5th gear is out and i was wondering if that means the trannsmission is on it way out or if it dosennt matter. Do you know how much it would cost to fix??

Depends how bad it really is. Are the teeth gone or is it syncros? Springs or bearings, what?

Marlin sells a nice kit to rebuild that tranny tuff.
Tranny shop I cant say as it varies everywhere.

My guess is that you have the W56 transmission. They go for about $200 used if they're in decent shape. You could also rebuild it, but that's probably more trouble than its worth IMO.

Well USUALLY 5ht gear stops and there is metal in the tranny...

If yer cheap - drain and refill the tranny gear oil and drive w/o 5th until onother gear goes....

or get another tranny and swap it in...

it completely depends on what failed. You should ask the previous owner if it made a bunch of noise when it went out, or if it just silently stopped working. If the gear itself actually chewed through the synchronizer ring, or broke the dog clutch inside the sleeve it will have leave debris in the transmission which could destroy more parts. If something like the shift linkage or synchro rail failed by just breaking off a pin then i really wouldn't worry about damage to other gears.

either way, its a W56, they cost pennies, i could find one here in a junkyard for 50 bucks, and i have friends with 3 or 4 of these trannys just laying around. the entire bed of my friends 79 parts truck is filled to the brim with broken W56's...

duno where you live but if your in or near oregon send me a PM i could give you an entire 5th gear and synchro assembly if you wanted.

Its not too bad. You should be able to do it yourself but its really nice to have an extra hand. The extra hand can be a complete idiot as long as they can listen to what you tell them to hold and such. You have to undo the bellhousing bolts, tranny cross member bolts, DS's, take the clutch slave off, shifters out, undo the few wires that are on the tranny. I think reverse and 4wd switches. I don't think I'm forgetting anything but I'm sure someone will chime in if I am. But as others have said why not rebuild it. The rebuild kits last time I bought one were very cheap and it worked really well. Got it from Marlin Crawler. Figured if I'm spending $200 might as well spend it making a brand new tranny rather that hoping the used one you buy is any good.

5th and reverse went out on my transmission. Turned out the shifter seat and bushing needed to be replaced. Fixed the missing gears and made it shift very nice and tight.

Its really not that hard to swap the tranny.

If yer on a budget - get a $200 trans and swap away..

If yer near NJ/PA I might have a spare W56

when it happened to my truck over a year ago it was like dominos. First its started poppin out of 4th a few weeks later I had to hold it in 4th, then one day 4th was just gone. But 5th worked. So for a few months i drove everywhere 1st 2nd 3rd then straight to 5th. Then one day it locked up in 5th and try as i might I couldnt get it out of gear for any reason. So it was parked till i could find a replacement tranny. One day i went to get something out of it and it slid out as easy as you please. So I drove it again lol. Within 1 week I had lost 5th gear all together. Well i worked close to home and drove it for a few weeks back and forth never leavin 3rd gear till I finally found a suitable parts truck for 100 buck and got what i needed...lol

this Just happened to me.

5th was getting harder to get into the last ten times, (on a road trip),.
then
reverse was feeling the same way...needed an extra push over to the right...as it kept just going into 4th...not reverse...but it worked like 5th...just more force.

then...
5th became loose as ˟˟˟˟, the shifter went all the way over to the 4wd selector...then i pulled over (on the freeway, same roadtrip about 500miles away), and i lost reverse completely...the shifter would just flail around out there in 5th and reverse territory...
so, (luckily) i got back on the freeway, and drove all the way home.

tried 5th a few times, but the shifter turned into a loose stick...and i put it back into 4th...so, now 1-4th is fine, but no 5th or reverse....
going to get the parts tomorrow, and dig in.

(ps...i know this is an old thread, but its still relevant...long live forums)

well
$31.78 later, (and about 20 minutes) for a 1st timer, its all done, and FIXED.

also, i removed the entire assembly, the 4 (12mm) bolts that hold up the shifter...so that was even more work, but i wanted to look inside for pieces of junk (none found)

the end piece was orange, and the very tip was a smaller diameter..
the inner rubber piece was only the rubber end/base and the entire inner part of that was gone....just gone.

so now...
the shifts are notchy and crisp again...so happy.
just wish my e30 bmw was this easy... long live the 88 yota 4x4 3vze

part number
33548-31010 Bush, shift lev (bin 1a03k1) $8.69
33505-35020 Seat Sub-Assy, (bin 1a03k1) $20.33
tax $2.76

all reference is of today, and interesting if 25 years from now, i will re-find my own post and need the same parts, and compare them.

well
happy trails to whoever reads this and finds it as useful as i have.
