next 4runner
ok we decided after i rebuild the engine in the 90 4runner we are gonna sell her and get something newer, butttt i love the body style of my 90 runner. my question would be this, hows the 96-98 4runners? do they have as many issues as most of the 2nd gens?

I've got almost 140k on mine and the only thing that have been replaced outside mormal maintenance is the rear axle seals which could almost be normal service usually by 100k miles which is kinda common and I just did my 1st t-belt/water pump service just last week.

I am really not sure what he means when he says "2nd gen issues".. To be honest the only thing that goes wrong commonly is the HG's...
My truck has 194,xxx on it and the only thing i have had to replace would be the A/C hose, the u-joints, couple hoses, and many many tires lol.
I have yet to have the HG's fail on me. Again, I am sure you have heard this many many times...
I just like having a truck made of metal, that you can throw a fridgy magnet to and will stick!
PS, a 3.4 only costs around $2,000. If you figure that the 3.4 gets about 5 more mpg than the 3.0, you could pay for itself in the long run right there...

I won't speak against the Tacoma/3rd Gen Runner but I will say this, the wheel bearings are a PITA to replace, and pretty much require a press with a special fitting. I tried to do one on a Tacoma and had to take it to a local parts store with a press and a ton of attacments to press the new bearing on and off.
The 3.4 is a sweet engine, and the front coil suspension on later model Toys is nice and cush to drive around.
