Newb needs some help! lack of power, 1995 V6 4Runner

I been searching the forum and this is what I've found and have done..

I've now replaced, fuel filter, sparks, new distributor cap, wires, and flushed out the auto tranny.

Problem I had since acquiring this beast was lack of power. Top speed so far has been 75-80MPH and that was during decline on the interstate. Going up hill, I have absolutely no power and pending starting speed, I'll hit 50-55MPH.

Bottomline, something is wrong!!

Idle seems fine, transmission shifts and feels fine, check the cat and cat seems fine.

My recent read here suggest that it could be the ignition timing issue?? Well, Unfortunately, I'm somewhat of a newb regarding 4runners and wondering if someone could step me thru. I've downloaded the FSM but still bit confused about how to check and adjust the timing. Looks like I need to grab the distributor and turn to change? Also, does 1995 4 runner have vacuum retard mechanism??

My first step would be to get a vacuum gauge and see what it reads. Most come with a little instruction sheet telling you what you should see and what it means, usually they cost <$20 at most part stores or Sears. A vacuum gauge could also tell you if your timing is off.

I'm sorry to be so ignorant.. but where would I hook this vacuum gauge to??

As a turbo rx7 owner, I have both vacuum gauge and vacuum pump in hand.

Have you checked the air filter? Timing lights are cheap too; where do you live? Maybe a Toyota nut local to you can give a hand.

hook the vacuum gauge up to the engine's intake manifold. preferably somewhere near the surge tank and not on an individual cyl intake runner. there should be a rubber hose somewhere you can pull off to get to a vacuum source.

BTW, you didn't mention it, but if you have bigger tires than stock and the original gearing, it will have a lack of power - the engine has less leverage to turn the wheels

Opps.. Yes, Air filter have been checked, MAF was cleaned, TB was cleaned.. and I live in Birmingham, AL

corax, Thank you. Makes sense. So, what should I see from this?? ie, what would be the correct vacuum I should see?

Also, Can you tell me if 95 4 runner has vacuum retard mechanism??


I am running slightly bigger tires. But I really can see that being this big of an issue. When I'm on the interstate, I am literally with 16 wheelers... When they go up hill, I'm right behind them going from 65 to 50 MPH by the time I'm over the hill.. and thats with my foot all the way down to the floor.

What size tires do you have on it?

Try this for a brief tutorial on using a vacuum gauge - it even has a neat animated gauge at the bottom to show you what it might do

It has electronic ignition timing control, so there won't be any kind of vacuum retard

Thanks for that info! I'm a rotary guy and never really thought about using vac gauge to check engine like that.

Question, So normal V6 on 95 4runner, I should see 20in of vacuum? Is this normal for all piston (excepted modded)? Just curious...
