Hello yotatech, I'm Rob from central Tx, New to the forum but not Toyota's. I currently own an 05 Tacoma d-cab sport long bed )mine) & an 02 4runner sport (wifes), both 2 wheel drive. I have been going off-roading with my buddies on Tacoma World & wanted to get an off road rig of my own. I found a screaming deal on a rust free, bone stock 86 4runner 4x4 with a 22re & automatic that I couldn't pass up. I know that a 5 speed would have been more desirable but the price was right. I am hoping to wheel this truck as is for a while & maybe look at a 5 speed swap & SAS down the line. First thing first, I need to get this thing in shape for the trail. Here is a pic of my new rig. The second pic is my other 2 rides.

I knew you had a soft spot for 86's, Logan! Welcome, we will be looking forward to all the pics of the things you will be buying and swapping out on that thing. It'll happen, trust me. I was never planning on taking mine out, it was just a DD. I'm just saying. Have fun with the project.

sweet rig man, hope it works for ya. I'm just north of Austin, let me know if you find some good place between here and there to wheel! lol, if you're ever near austin, check out Turkey Bend, near Lake Travis. I'm pretty sure its cool to wheel there, and there are some decent places to goof off. not anything major, but still fun.

I had an 87 with an auto before I had my current. It was over 200k without a rebuild on the tranny and still shifted fine, it was just gutless. I am sure with proper tire size/ gearing, you will do fine until the SAS and 5 spd swap

The auto's rather durable, all things considered, though some don't like it 'cause it steals power. In my opinion, they're good for off-road since you don't have to slip a clutch to get power to the ground. With low gears and crawler transfer cases that's not a big issue since the low ratios give you time to get the gears but likewise, those low gears and shocking the driveline with a sudden burst of torque when letting out the clutch also makes things more prone to breaking, if you ask me.

About the auto, look up DIRTCO's '89 4Runner build before you decide to swap the auto. It's one of the nicest 1st gens ever IMO, and opted to stay with the auto.

Thanks guys, I agree 86 was a good year, here is an old pic of my 86 x-cab 4x4 I had about 10 years ago.



I am going to be looking for a bunch of interior parts for my 4runner, I have seen several part outs on the forum but if anyone know where I can find some in Texas please let me know.

LOL! Get their catalog and you'll never read anything again - you can spend DAYS looking at that thing!

I just got the LC header and Pro Flow Exhaust - header is on and I drove it home 40 miles last night with only the header on (no cops!) - makes the 4 sound like an 8....not bad at idle, but when you give ANY gas, it's a monster. I need that exhaust on ASAP so I don't get a ticket.

LCE has really good quality and good customer service - they're very well respected in the community I'm finding, and I can't wait to save up and get more upgrades.

ENGNBLDR on eBay also has great quality/service parts (Timing chain kits, cams, etc).

Keep us posted on what you do to it!!

Do you have any ideas where to turn up some interior parts around central Texas, I am going to need a lot in stuff as my interior is pretty much gutted.
