New (to me) 89 Toyota Pickup with the 3.slow

I picked up this truck when I started walkin after my ˟˟˟˟ty motorcycle accident last summer that ˟˟˟˟ed me all up, and I love this thing! It's seen better days, but so have I and we both still runnin good! It's got 215,500 miles, came with a wrap sheet of stuff like timing belt valve covers and all sorts of stuff, It just leaks a little power steering fluid and oil.. from I think the oil pan, but hear its a pain in the dick to change... I dont mind the steering fluid it aint much and I carry it anyways, but oil I go through about a quart a month... which I mean, atleast its getting new stuff added all the time I guess! What kind of oil should I use ? Im about to go across the country on it and would love for it to hold up proper. just replaced thermo pump switch thing and temp sensor, might goto the junk yard and grab spares... what else! I ride old harleys so Im used to carrying extra oil and parts just in case!

You should sell your truck to me.. I've got the same 1989 Red xtra cab 3.0 but 4x4!

I use 10w30 full synthetic (any brand is good..they're all the same, mostly) in the summer, and then 5w30 in the winter. I find that the 5w30 warms the truck quicker in the winter, while it leaks a little less in the summer with the 10w30.

It's possible that your power steering lines are dryrotted and just need replacing, which is easy. OR the hose clamp is loose from the bottom hose of the reservoir. OR your pump is just leaky and could use a rebuild! It's pretty cheap, too! The kit is only like $25 or so

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyot...p-rebuild.html

That guy did a great write-up for rebuilding it.

Im using a synthetic blend right now, so i top if off with valvoline high mileage blend, Id like to keep using a blend because with old harleys they like dinosaur oil and they always stayed pretty well mechanically when I'd open them up. Any wrongs in using a blend? its got 5w30 in it now Ill be changing it to 10w before I leave.

And now rebuilding the pump, how do I go about that? I don't have any jacks or anything, the oil change place said I'd need a new one but I mean, it works great so I think I just need new seals or whatevers in there.. but it works, and an old saying if it aint broke dont fix it, it just marks its territory. i thoroughly inspected the pump and it does look like a rebuild would help it... one day! I rather get the oil leak fixed but it seems like a giant PITA for the oil pan removal, but part of me sees it could be removed and placed back on,.. gingerly lol.

alot of people do want this truck lol, the interior is immaculate! just red. but i love everything about this beat up ole bird.

So I'm about to take it coast to coast next week (Ill start a thread for yall here if interested, i like pictures of stuff, if not oh well dont click!) to finish what I started on bikes last year and recovered just in time for spring, this will be a mighty fine piece of recovery.. 215,500 about to change the oil to Valvoline Mix blend high miles 10/30, says gauranteed 225k! so thatd be sweet!

Anyways, cigarette lighter, I need a USB charger thing in it, is got a plastic piece where a cig lighter should be that comes out, what would I have to do?

I got super ˟˟˟˟ed up by a car that ran a red last year, i wasnt wearing a helmet so I consider myself one lucky road dawg!

Blower motor resistor, up under glove box, is probably shot. Classic symptom of that is only hi speed for blower. The little square plug that has wires plugged into the back of a blank plastic cap is where the clock would mount. Go snatch a clock from a similar year at a pick n pull, it'll hook right up. I had a hole there for a long time until I took the time to stick a clock in it.

Ha! Lol. There's a couple better stash spots I've seen, but that's not something I have to ever worry about.

I use stash spot loosely. Jewelry, change, etc. You mean there's other stash-able items?

Anyone thing this truck will make the coast to coast journey? 215500mi, got oil that guarantees atleast up to 225k! so lets hope it doubles that! Recovery Run

Awesome! That's exactly what I have. What kinda speeds were you in for longer periods? After riding old harleys you get a feel for where's good, and 65 55 is a nice spot on this truck. I'm in no hurry, I hit 100 once.. My second time driving it down an old country long straight road, no one arounds, why not, had to, I been in a wheelchair for 5 months not doin ˟˟˟˟, .2 mph but man, its smooth, just doesn't like ˟˟˟˟ty roads as much as me. Sometimes it feels it'll start off in 2nd gear when coming to a stop, I gotta really feel it out to get it to do it right, what would cause that too>

They'll run all day at 50-70, but much past 65, and the fuel burn to distance travelled ratio falls off pretty sharply in my experience. I hear of guys running uphill at 70 in 3rd for sustained periods. They're tough.

I drove mostly at about 60 mph because I found that gave me the best mileage.. 4x4 and all. However, she also cruises easily all the way until ~80mph. And she'll do it just fine in 5th gear! If you need to shift down to 3rd to maintain highway speeds, there's something wrong with your truck! If my Xtra cab 4x4 with 32x9.5s, a camper, tent topper, tube bumper, and shot rear springs can do it, so can yours!!!

Yeah, wasn't me. I know mine would do it, but I'm not that rough. This guy lived in Cali, ran the grapevine all the time. And he'd put some work in his, wasn't really stock anymore.

One day when I make my riches, I'm gonna keep this truck because I do enjoy it very much and I don't want to look like I have money.. Won't even paint or put rims on it, but a flathead v8 under the hood would be nice, or something cool and old and fits, dont care about power, just feel, but its gotta do a hundo... I'm an addict to old junk... yeah i even thought of shoving 3 ironhead motors in its bay.. I got some weird plans.

I have an automatic, and sometimes it feels like itll try startin out in 2nd, or the clutch slippin but then itll remember to downshift or engage and hook up nicely just sometimes, if I'm good with timing and ˟˟˟˟ itll never do it, but sometimes im not
