New lift, tires and wheels... Gearing?
Below is a pick of my 88 pickup I recently bought. I'll post more picks later.
I've bought some new rock crawler wheels that I'll be adding 33" tires to. Am also most likely going to go for a 3" Performance Accessories body lift (can't afford the suspension lift right now).
My question is about gearing... I've read on here that a change of gearing ratios is necessary when adding bigger tires. This saves fuel etc. SO... how do i do this and what should I expect to spend? Do i need to buy parts? Everything on my truck is stock right now... Also, will I need bj spacers?

I run 35's with my stock gears. it is not ideal, but with the manual tranny it isn't too bad. you can almost fit 33's without rubbing with no body lift and just removing the mud flaps and pounding over the body seam. BJ spacers would probably be enough to clear the tires in the front, and maybe a 2" block in the back and you wouldn't need the body lift at all.

Did you change your gearing and how much of a lift do you have there? Looks great!... Also, i'm new to this stuff. I get the 1.5 bj spacers but what do you mean by 63s out back?

Your 4 banger will not get out of it's own way on 35's with stock gears. Lots of people do it but plan on getting passed by loaded semi's and fiats on every hill you go up. Your clutch will be toast in no time also. By 63's he means 63" chevy leaf springs. That is popular lift spring for Toyotas. Installing them involves welding in new hangers. It's not a direct bolt on set up.

get 1.5inch bj spacers- 4crawler.com for about $115
2inch add-a-leaf- topguncustomz.com mine was $40
and some 33x10.50 or 12.50. this is the setup i got and love it, not to high, yet clear 33x12.50s pretty good

Thanks so much yoder519! This helps a lot! I'll def check that stuff out. Sounds like I'll just ignore the body lift kit and go with 1.5" BJ spacers and the add a leaf. THANKS

I've looked at the bj spacers and add a leafs... Is this something I could install myself with basic tools etc? Did you modify yourself and what was your experience?

no i didnt install mine myself i had it professioinly done b/c i wanted it to be done righ tand i didnt have the tools or place or knowledge to do it at the time. i know you have to trim a littel of your upper control arm to fit the spacers in. theres threads on here with writeups on guys that did it.

I wouldn't abandon the body lift idea just yet. A lot of people don't like body lifts, but they do have functional value. Their main purpose is simply to make room for larger tires. I have a 2" BL and can clear 33x10.50 easily. Plus, they cost well under $200 and can be installed easily at home with basic tools. However, I would advise against going with the 3" BL. When I installed my 2", a lot of "extra" work had to be done to other affected areas, such as steering, radiator, front bumper, shifters, and probably other stuff that I'm forgetting. Total time for me and a buddy to do everything was about 6-7 hours, most of which was spent with the "extra" stuff I just described. Putting in the lift "pucks" took about an hour. I would imagine a 1" would be super easy to install since it has minimal, if any, effect on other areas.
